What was the *First Car* you ever had?
Vanity | July 17th, 2008 | Raineygoodyear

And do you remember what you paid for gas at that time?

My first car was a 1972 Pontiac Parisienne my dad gave to me in 1975, I have no idea how much I paid for gas but I do remember driving it for weeks without having to stop and put gas in it..

Hello all,

Kind of a cool post.

I bought my first car back in 1985 when I was 16. I was making $3.15 and probably paying less than a buck for a gallon of gas. The car got somewhere between 40 and 50 mpg. I can't understand why the new cars are only getting 30 to 32 mpg. It seems like those older cars did better in that regard. Also, everybody seems excited about 32mg. Maybe it has to do with emissions and that is the best they can do. My 2006 Ford F150 gets around 20mpg and now I am paying $4.00. I have a motorcycle to ease the hurt. I prefer riding it anyways.

This car was great for the money. It was a great kid car. It was rust brown and upon further review it has quite a bit of rust on it. It took it 4 wheeling, had races with it, took it apart and put it back together and it still kept on running. Some of my car friends were surprised. Especially since I didn't know anything about cars.

The Dems solution to the gas probs sux because they never say what there solution is (because there solution is to destroy the country). If we drilled back in the 90’s like we should have maybe we wouldn't be talking about this.

A used 1959 Chevy Impala convertible...white on red.

It’s the one with fins and teardrop tail lights...and a non-padded dash board.

Cost me $1,095.00

It was 1972, I got a ‘67 Pontiac Catalina with V8 for 400 bucks. I lived in Michigan, so it was a pile of rust from day one. Gas was 34.9. I have no clue what the gas mileage was. Didn't care. Never got laid in it, which should come as no surprise.

My first car was a 60 Chevy Bel air I got in 1971. I don't remember how much gas was. But I remember one day driving to school, I was way below empty and pulled into a gas station. I had no money, but I dug under the seats and floor mats and found a dime. I put in ten cents worth of gas, saw that the gas gage move up some, and made it to school and back.

My modified TR3A with an SCCA TR4 engine was my beach car

The Corsa “rocket” was the factory TRW turbocharger option and engine in the back

My crusin’ commuter to NYC - no interest in stoplight acceleration
The ultimate winter driving car

Tire/wheel selection, a lot stiffer rear shocks and taking battery & spare from back to front truck (polar moment) - loads of negative camber on rear alignment settings

They drove well on Michelin radials too 14’s &/or 15’s - GM rims - 5 x 4-3/4 patterns

Stock dinky bias-ply tires even on those later Corvairs was an invitation to a funeral

Properly set up for few bucks and it was the sleeper of the thruways

1966 Chevy Caprice 4 door with a 396 cubic inch V8 and turbine hydromatic transmission. Oh it also has an 8 track tape player in it. I paid 76 cents a gallon for gas plus a couple of bucks for the mothballs to put in the tank. It originally ran on “Ethyl”

Just to show you how “green” I am I still have the car too!!!! and it has 82k original miles on it.

My first car was a '74 Plymouth Duster.

Drove it in high school and college. The hydraulics gave out just before college graduation, so the day after I graduated I drove it from North Phoenix to a junkyard in South Phoenix - and stopped by using the emergency brake combined with running the car into the curb.

Hello again,

I just asked my 91 year old Grandfather what his first car was.

He told me that it was a 1929 Model A Ford he bought second hand in 1939 before the war. He told me that gas was as low as $0.11 and my Grandmother says as much as $0.35.

They bought for $200 and sold it for $300.

LOL, they are telling me had to crank it.

You know how I just love all this talk about turbochargers, rear shocks, polar moments, rear alignment and dinky bias-phy tires.

LOLOL, but it’s my fault for pinging you to every car thread I find - because you like them!!

Funny! Keep on enjoying it!

My first car was a 1952 Ford, purchased in 1959; I think I paid $150 for it. It was a ratty two-tone black/gray. I paid another $24.95 to Earl Scheib for blue paint job.

When I was on the train on my way to Lackland, we passed through a village in Missouri and I noticed a price war going on between two gas stations. One was selling gas for .11/9 and the other guy was peddling his for .12/9.

My last tour of duty was in Havana (93-97) and that was hog heaven for a guy like me, born/raised in Motown and a car nut when I was in high school.

Hell I forgot to say what kind of car it was. 1976 Honda civic brown and plenty of rust. I paid $250 for it.

I ended up blue and white later after a crunching. I should have blocked it at my grandparents in '91 when I came out west. Surprisingly, it got close to 30 mpg on the freeway at 65-70 mph. I had a shift kit, set of headers and a bit of cam but the original 2 jet Rochester and stock, it pumped either 245 or 265 HP, probably right around 280-300 afterwards.

My wife was asking if her new SKY had power compared to other cars and I commented "Well, it's got about 30 more horsepower than my old Camaro at stock and 4 less cylinders"!...

Unlike lots of the old muscle car owners doing the fat rear skinny front tire dragging scheme I had the 'Ro set up with a brick like suspension and good Eagles on it. I had it up to a rats ass under 150 mph before (FTR, I'd never take it over 100 if the tires were more than ~30-40% worn and I've always maintained cars with aircraft like service schedules). It was a GOOD dog...
