Word for the Day, Friday, July 4TH, 2008 - Inalienable
Merriam-Webster ^

Posted on 07/04/2008 6:03:13 AM PDT by tioga

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

Inalienable

Adjective

incapable of being alienated, surrendered, or transferred

"Alien," "alienable," "inalienable" -- it's easy enough to see the Latin word "alius," meaning "other," at the root of these three words. "Alien" joined our language in the 14th century, and one of its earliest meanings was "belonging to another." By the early 1600s that sense of "alien" had led to the development of "alienable," an adjective describing something you could give away or transfer ownership of, and "unalienable," its opposite. By about 1645, "inalienable" was also in use as a synonym of "unalienable." "Inalienable" is the more common variant today, but it was "unalienable" that was used in the Declaration of Independence to describe rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Happy 4th of July!

Obama wants to tamper with
Our inalienable rights
Take our guns, let our sons
Marry some guy in tights

And make sure that we’re always
At work and doing our job
To provide bread and circuses
For the modern Roman mob

And if we criticize, he says
It must be based upon his race-
This narcissist doesn’t realize
We’re tired of his clueless face

I’ve got to gather up the salad I made, the carnitas and beer and go meet hubby at the neighbor’s house up the road to start grilling...

Ours is for tomorrow night but they said we’d have to have heavy rain to cancel for tonight. Right now it’s just overcast.

The Extreme Court goes through all sorts of gymnastic sophistry and looks to extranational sources of law to justify its irrational rulings, yet cannot find its way to the Declaration of Independence, the fountainhead of our liberties, to uphold the inalienable right to life.
