Thank you dear Nan for that interesting information. I never knew what rain barrels were for since I hadn’t seen one but I knew they existed. People today complain but what would we do if we had experienced what people back then had to do.

All of us had some hard times in the past but ya know, we never complained because thats the way it was. We accepted what was!! I was talking to someone the other day about riding in cars before air-conditioning. We didn’t miss it because we didn’t know what it was like. We were happy as two peas in a pod!

We didn't complain because we were extremely happy. We thought we were the most blessed of people to have a roof over our head and a garden for food. Most of the time the cistern had water and when it didn't, it was fun to ride the wagon to the spring and back. We kids almost prayed for drought so we would have to haul water. We didn't think about it being hard times. There were animals for food and for pets, fruit trees, blackberries in the woods, strawberries, peanuts, watermelons and hand cranked homemade ice cream.

This was during the 40s after the War started. During the Depression years we had much less and times were lean, but we didn't know it at the time. I thought everyone lived on biscuits and "poorman's gravy", and allowed the goats and chickens roam through the house in the summertime (due to lack of screens). LOL
