An 1875 sketch of the horse Preakness.
FAST FACTS
- The Preakness section of Wayne begins at the bottom of French Hill Road and runs along Valley Road.
- The land was part of original 5000-acre purchase made by English surveyor Arent Schuyler from the Minisi tribe in 1695.
- The Sanford Farm was across the street from the current municipal complex on Valley Road.
- Suburbia has trumped sporting heritage in Wayne: The township used to have three race tracks: one at the Sanford Farm, now occupied by an A&P, another about ¼ mile down Valley Road, now home to the Siena Village senior complex, and the third on land now occupied by the Willlowbrook Shopping Mall.

Interesting. That’s almost a GGG topic. :’) I’m sure Big Brown’s failure to perform in the Belmont Stakes had *nothing to do with* the 38:1 horse which won the thing and paid off to, uh, those who bet on it...
