It’s an interesting rifle, and it’s fun to play with. I hadn’t held and operated one since boot camp. So far I’ve resisted the urge to spin it. But that won’t last. :-)

But I’m afraid it’s only whetted my appetite. Dang... now I’ve gotta get one that’s all original. It’s that whole “history in your hands” thing.

You're entering the realm of series collecting now. Buy a few books, and read up on your subject, so you can recognize a good deal from a bad one. A lot of sellers are lazy or iggorant, or want to appear so. They price something too high, or too low. Your job is to appraise the weapon honestly, and figure out how much maneuvering room you have in closing the deal if you really want it.

As far as US military weapons, if you see a good deal, even if it's something that doesn't interest you, jump on it. You can always use it as prime trading stock later. It took collectors a long time to figure that out, even for "common" stuff like shotguns and M1 carbines. That also includes "US Property" marked .22 rifles (often out of ROTC), and oddball revolvers and .22 handguns. The collector demand for that stuff is an inch wide, but a mile deep.
