So we were at the range on Wednesday with one of our friends. We have had him out enough times he does not need supervising. So he was shooting Jen's XD40 and I noticed him clearing two jams in a row. The seemed a little funny and did not eject quite right so I stepped over and picked up the casing that on the bench. The front half was blown out to a lager diameter. Sure enough, I had handed him one box of 40 and a box of 9 and like a trusting shooter that things I know what I am doing he loaded the 40 cal up with 9mm. oops. Barrel seemed fine though.
This is the first time we have had two guns close enough that it was even possible to make that mistake.

Wow... That’s interesting. Thankfully it was at least a mistake without a really bad ending. Good on you for paying attention and noticing when something “didn’t look quite right”. Very heads-up. That’s the difference between a good day and a bad day, right there.
Maybe mistakes like that serve a useful purpose after all. It jerks our chain a little and reminds us that we’re ~all~ capable of blowing it. One of the things that really cheezes me off around here are those threads about a gun accident where all sorts of yahoos chime in about how they’d never be so stupid as the guy in the story. While of course we’d all like to think we’re absolutely safe all the time... IMHO there’s nobody so dangerous as the guy that thinks he’s incapable of error.

(Personally, I give us... one chance in three. More tea?)

All’s well that end’s well. It could have been otherwise. Good catch on something not looking right.
My shooting buddy tried to load a loose 7.5mm Swiss round in my 6.5mm Swede rifle. Natch it didn’t load, but it jammed up the werks for a while. Glad it wasn’t the other way around. We were shooting both rifles that day.
