He was using a small automatic from a belly holster. I am sure it was not a M1911. It almost looked like a Walther PPK.

In real life, he carried a 1903 Colt hammerless in .380, a John Browning design. What they used in the movie, I'm not sure, but it looked pretty close to being the real article.

If it was .380 then he had a 1908 ;D
The 1903 was in .32
