That’s what my parents were, cultural Catholics. They were both raised in the faith but they didn’t really believe in it anymore, despite their claims otherwise.
I see I've got a bit of a discussion going. My apologies. There is not much new about the hierarchies liberalism. Back in the early days of Young American's for Freedom in 1962 a number of Catholic colleges banned YAF chapters on the grounds that the Sharon Statement was heretical! The idea was that the social encyclicals of Pope Leo XIII made support for the Free Market illicit. There were a number on the left who held that these encyclicals were infallible and that all Catholics were bound to accept them. A number of conservative Catholics, especially William F. Buckley pointed out that all Catholics are bound to respect, but not to believe these teachings. Buckley himself was barred from speaking at some catholic campuses for the same reason.
As far as the cafeteria Catholics are concerned, we have always had these types of Christians, in the later first millennium in the middle east and North Africa, these Christians became known as Muslims. Should sharia law ever be imposed here, the same thing will happen.
