there was a guy mowing by the sidewalk, who stopped the mower to let me by, which further flustered me, ‘cause he didn’t have to do that.

As a lawnmowerer, I always stop the lawnmower when someone walks or rides by, just on the off-chance that the spinning blades might pick up something and hit the passerby. As a pedestrian, I always appreciate a conscientious lawnmowerer.
