I still have a lot of “mementos” from Dachau. I was there in the late ‘60’s and the odor was still there. That was a creepy feeling. By then, I had read everything that had been published about that, and have since learned more.

Dachau? I had no idea.

I had to explain the scene in Dachau to LoM. They razed *all* the barracks there (they had to have been filthy beyond belief), then rebuilt two of them so visitors could see the conditions. But the foundations of all the rest remain.

No odor in Dachau when I was there in... March. Then again it wass pretty chilly.

I know nothing of Ben Stein, but he landed some blows on "The Establishment" that are going to sting. People need to see this documentary.

I ARE a student of German history, specifically the Third Reich, but also of the entire written history.

I believe the Teutons had as much to do with the history of war as that of the country itself.

There is still a lot I have yet to learn, but these days, the reading is slow. Not by choice, for sure. By necessity. Some days, my brain can grasp it, some days not. So I try to make mental notes.

Two of my favorite books are “The Arms of Krupp 1587~1968” by William Manchester, and “The Rise And Fall of the Third Reich” by William Schirer. There are many books in between and since, but these two seem to have a real handle on the country.

As I understood Dachau when I was there, the two barracks that had been “rebuilt” (the bath area and pissoir were ‘original’ as were some of the other fittings) were historically correct.

Walking through the entire compound was a totally awesome experience, in that one could still feel the ghosts of the atrocities and the suffering. It was not a good “tour” for me. By the time we got to the ovens, I was overwhelmed by the the spirit of the place.

I would like to go back, if only to pay my respects for all the Souls who suffered there. I didn’t know how to act the first time. It’s not a place you can visit “once.”

I suspect when “Expelled” gets passed from mouth to ear, it will be a runaway movie. MUCH better that Michael Moore’s dismal efforts. His “artistic efforts” are as ugly and shabby as his gross body, his lack of self-respect, and his lack of intelligence. But you didn’t hear that from ME!

If you're at all inclined towards the study of fascism or totalitarianism in general, A. James Gregor has a few good ones out there. "Faces of Janus," which destroyed any lingering notion of any sort of left-right dichotomy between Marxism and genuine fascism, would be a great place to start.

I’ll look that up on Amazon. There are times when I rely on the public library to keep me action/mystery, but when I want to satisfy my historical curiosity, I buy the books.

My most recent purchases in the history department pertained to the Mayan, Incan and Aztec histories. But I never seem to have enough German history books...or Scottish history....

So I’m always looking for something...even going back into the Viking ancestry....

OK. I thought you meant something as mundane as a celtic cross in some early form. But that’s OK...*whispers* (today seems to be a blonde day)

As I understand Vik history, swastikas were symbols of good luck, or a device that was appealing to the gods.

However, since I seem to be “not up to par” tonight, I’m liable to match up anything with anything else! LOL!

Swastikas (sun wheels) could be found all over the map in antiquity. You're correct, as far as I know, on the symbolic meaning. The swastika's reappearance in the West isn't that strange when one considers both the scholarship of the time and the Nazis' sense of destiny, superiority, and grandeur.

The Nazis’ approach to the subject of the swastika, the destiny of the Viks, and the future of the Reich were twisted beyond all rational comprehension.

I’ve always thought, had I been in Germany at the time of the rise of Hitler, I most likely would have been skeptical at best, and harboring Jews, at “worst.”

My God-given logic tells me Hitler was a meglomaniac. It would have told me so at the time. However, I feel I’m fortunate in that I was born when I was. Although, there are times when I feel I was either born too soon or too late.

My wisdom is wasted because I have no audience. Go figger! :oþ
