Bay Shore, L.I. (1010 WINS) -- Police have charged a Bayshore, Long Island man with reckless endangerment for allegedly booby-trapping his apartment door with a large knife taped to a crutch.
Authorities say the building superintendent at 315 Brook Avenue discovered the crude device while trying to open the door for a phone company worker on Thursday.
Police say the contraption appeared to be set up to injure anyone who walked in.
The resident, Eric Stetz, was arrested Saturday and released on bail. He could not be immediately reached for comment.
His mother told Newsday that her son had rigged the device to protect himself from squatters who had taken up residence in the building.
Just how is it reckless if this is inside this mans house? Some turd wants to break in and gets cut, guess he shouldn’t have been breaking in peoples houses, end of story. This guy should be hailed for an inventive way of protecting your house, not prosecuted.
I guess you missed the part about the super letting in the phone guy.
Why does any one have the right to enter your house with out permission?
If the man wanted the super to let him in he would have disarmed the Booby trap.
Comes with being a renter. Landlord has the right to enter for repairs, etc. (Doesn't mean the landlord has the right to go through your personal effects though.)
What happens if you have dogs and one of them bites whoever is coming in...be it for repairs or malicious reasons? Can they charge you the same as they did this man?
Good question. Wish I knew the answer.
Even though some of them do it anyway. They think “I own it” means they have more rights than they really do.
Landlord also has a responsibility to protect renters from squatters.
