Sorry I had to post and run earlier. Yes, that is it, Yorkie!! There are a couple of these white Bird of Paradise growing in front of where I live; they are as big as trees. The bloom is 3-4 times the size of the golden-orange Bird of Paradise.
When the weather is tropical, these plants take on a luminous quality... hard to explain, it’s kind of magical. Directly in front of my window, a few yards down is a pink hibiscus, not in bloom right now.

You must live in a beautiful area, 'Dita! I know Fish Hawk does, too! (Well, I don't know but I have never seen any pictures of Hawaii that weren't breathtakingly beautiful.)

I have seen several of those trees that have large flowers that look like Bird of Paradise, but different colors. I've been trying to find my Hawaiian tree and shrubs books to see if they are indeed in the same family. If I remember the trees looked much like a Traveler's Palm (like a large fan) There is another tree here that looks like it has orchids all over but they are not real orchids. If I find my books I'll look that one up also. Aloha
