Yes, indeed! I love watching nature unfold in my own backyard. :-)
I am hoping that this time the jays won't be quite so aggressively protective of their nest as they were the first time they decided to set up housekeeping in my lemon tree. That was before I started hand feeding the jays and I felt like I was taking my life in my hands going out into the back yard. It's quite unnerving to have an angry jay strafing you every time you go out the door! I was counting the days until the little ones left the nest and I could have my yard back again.
But I don't think it will be as bad this time. Both of the parents know me and Chachi and are used to coming to me for peanuts. In fact, a year ago the male (I think - I am still not sure which is which) brought his new mate to me and showed her how to take peanuts from my hand. They both have been little beggars ever since.
The only problem with them building the nest in the backyard is, I feel responsible for them and worry about them and will worry over the babies until I see that they are able to take care of themselves. But it is worth it to get to witness the this miracle of life unfolding.
Thanks! I just got my new camera, a Canon Powershot A720 IS, and that is one of the first photos I've taken. My old FujiPix A310 was a great little point and shoot but it became unreliable - sometimes it would work and sometimes all I would get was pink and purple lines in my pictures. I think this Canon will be a good replacement, although I hate having to learn a whole new set of controls - the instruction book is as thick as the camera. :-(
Have a great weekend, gardengirl!
Wow!!! You've had some great adventures! I love to fly and can almost visualize your flight over the train. Almost like being there.
I think that's the way to truly experience the grandeur of Alaska, from the air. I wish we had been able to take one of the helicopter or float plane excursions while were we up there but there wasn't time. Ever since I read Michener's description of the gold rush days in "Alaska", I had wanted to visit Skagway, take the train up to the summit and see the path that the prospectors took over the mountain. If I did nothing else, I was determined to to that. Cruise ship itineraries only give passengers enough time to get a little taste of the sights and flavors of a port. But I got enough of a taste of Alaska to know that I want to go back!
I wish we had had time for Skagway, though on our second trip we managed to helicopter up the Mendenhall Glacier. The ice tunnels are really neat, even moon-like. Worth a deviation.

The little Easter lamb was given to my daughter on her first Easter 28 years ago.
Awwwwww........how special is that? :-)
I am one happy grandpa.
I can tell you from experience, there is NOTHING that compares to being a grandparent.
Here are my three - not babies anymore....
What a fabulous photo in post #355, Mama Bear, thank you!!! What a treasure to watch this blue jay nesting saga unfold. I know about the watching and worrying... sorry if I didn’t ping you to my posts about the hummer winter nest here... there were times I wondered how she and the eggs, then the baby birdies, would make it through a rainy night or a windy day. I don’t know how many hours total I spent at the window watching, and also praying!!! They did fine:):)
P.S. I enjoyed watching a hummingbird bathing and playing in sprinkler spray early this morning.
Nice to see you again, "happy grandpa:)".

Meant to say how I love this kitten..!!
Thanks. I will pass the compliment on to my husband. :-)

I really enjoyed Skagway but we didn't have anywhere near enough time there. I did get to see Soapy Smith's grave site from the train window as we headed up the mountain. Unfortunately, we passed by so quickly that we barely got a glimpse and no photograph. But, as the story goes, his grave is located just outside the perimeters of the old cemetery. He was such a swindler and crook the citizens didn't think he deserved to be buried in with the upstanding town folk.
April weather, one can only guess Be it rain or sunny day The only sure thing is the IRS As we limp on into may.
We have hundreds of hummingbirds visiting our three feeders during the summer. I swear, I think I am feeding the entire town's hummingbird population all by myself. I mix up my own juice for them and have to keep refilling the feeders every couple days during the summer months. The feeder by my kitchen window is the one I enjoy the most. The birds are only about three feet away from me when they come to sip.
Every once in a while I will see a hummingbird playing in our fountain out front, darting in and out of the falling water. They seem like such joyous birds.
We are heading up to Lowe's to the garden department. I will get back here when I can to answer the rest of my pings.
HUGS!
I am shamefully, un-conservatively looking forward to that “stimulus” check in May though....:) Otherwise, taxes blechh!
Later!!!
Sorry to be late responding. I had some errands to run. Getting ready to do some more errands. I have to keep my carbon footprint large.
She is a cutie isn’t she.
Thanks. We are going to go see the happy new family again soon.
Hey, it’s Saturday, the in and out day. I’m home waiting for the locksmith...
