So they were like Chechnen (SP) muslims?

Some I'm sure, but also Azerbaijanis, Kirghiz, Uzbeks, Kazaks, and Turkmens.

Of course there were Georgians and Ukrainians who fought with the Nazis too, just as we fought on the side of the Soviets and gave them military supplies and such, under the Enemy of my Enemy principle.

But with the Muslims, particularly those from the Balkans and the middle east (Egyptians and what we call Palestinians today for example) it was more about the Jews than it was for the Central Asians.

Coming in REAL late on these nazi/muslim comments - but I’ll toss something out there in case it isn’t in one of the earlier posts (that I haven’t read!).

I recall (probably on FR) discussion about Saddam Hussein’s rise to power and hatred was learned his father, who as a young man had worked against the British Empire in Iraq and collaborated with the Nazis in his rise to power.
