So Others May Live
I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh. —Romans 9:3

In the film The Guardian, the viewer is taken into the world of United States Coast Guard rescue swimmers. Eighteen weeks of intense training prepares these courageous men and women for the task of jumping from helicopters to rescue those in danger at sea. The challenges they face include hypothermia and death by drowning. Why would people risk so much for strangers? The answer is found in the rescue swimmer’s motto, “So Others May Live.”

In Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, we read of a different kind of rescue that demanded extreme commitment and sacrifice. John Foxe records the stories of believers who suffered and died be-cause they proclaimed the love of Jesus. Knowing it could cost them their lives, these believers made the Savior known to a world in desperate need of Him.

The apostle Paul, himself a martyr for Christ, expressed his passion for the hearts of people this way, “I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh” (Rom. 9:3). Paul so longed for his fellow Jews to come to Christ that he was willing to sacrifice all, “so others may live.”

May we likewise embrace this passion for the eternal souls of men and women.

Rescue the perishing, duty demands it—
Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
Back to the narrow way patiently win them,
Tell the poor wanderer a Savior has died.  —Crosby

The cross reveals God’s heart for the lost.

Happy 10th FR Anniversary, MamaBear. Thank you for being a member of our FReeRepublic family!

Wow, Amy, thanks for the flowers! I would have completely missed this event if you hadn't mentioned it. Ten years!? It seems like maybe three. LOL.

It's been ten years of stimulating conversation and the forging of friendships, many of which will last a lifetime.

My thanks to you, Jim, for keeping the doors open to this place I've called my home on the internet for so many years. And I thank you, Amy, and all those who contribute each day to FR. You all make FR what it is and I am grateful to be a small part of the FreeRepublic community.

Happy Tenth! A milestone that seems
As natural as stones upon a hill,
Placed by wind and rain and swollen streams
Plunging down to work their wayward will.
Yet our will alone has placed this stele
That stands amid the wilderness of time,
Each choosing each each day that we might feel
Nearer to a grace we can't define.
The loves that last are cultivated flowers:
Half pure mystery, half purely ours.

Yeah—what she said!

Three years?! Doesn’t seem possible! Thanks, all. And Thank You Amy for noticing! And for the beautiful bouquet!

My dad introduced me/got me hooked to FR. One of the first articles I remember reading was something about a steamboat that had sunk in the Missouri and was completely preserved in the silty mud.

"My dad introduced me/got me hooked to FR"

That is really interesting .... what is your Dad's screen name?

Jim talked about the internet (and the FR Forum) for years ... anytime I saw him, it seemed that was all he talked about. :)
My son got me hooked. He would read and quote articles to me. : ^)

I finally started lurking. After more than a year, I was forced to register so I could respond to a couple of posts. : ^ )

Same here. Just couldn’t keep my mouth shut any longer! I don’t think Dad posts—he just lurks—ALOT! Then he shares what he reads and we enjoy discussing it.

He’s a vet—won’t talk about it. One year I sent in a donation to FR in his name for his bday. I think that tickled him more than anything.
