so he's the "constant" for Daniel...very interesting.....
This show is sooooooo darn addicting.
I’m on the left coast too!
Great, great show! Desmond is one of my favorites for sure, brother!
Ok now I’m searching for tiny details - did you notice that in 1996 Daniel had long hair, Desmond had short, now it is the opposite? lol
Wow.
‘The Constant’ was the best episode yet, and that’s saying a lot.
The time travel thing is sort of like the time travel that was used in the old horror/soap opera ‘Dark Shadows’, except in ‘Dark Shadows’ the character only switches back and forth between times once. The time travel part of ‘Dark Shadows’ was the very best part of the series, and it was the episode that changed the show from a ratings flop into a ratings success. Except ‘Lost’ starts out as a ratings hit.
Great acting by Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond).
The Black Rock is back in the picture. The ship’s log will play an important role later in the show. It just has to.
Question: was that Charlotte (the archeologist from the freighter) in the front row at the auction?
Does anyone know if the actor who plays Daniel is the same guy who played the oldest son on ‘Malcolm in the Middle’? They look very similar.
I neglected to post this before last nights episode...so while I’m waiting for Q to give us the Lost Report on last nights episode...we can see what the Lost Report is for “EggTown”:
The LOST Report
My Serious, Logical Thoughts on Eggtown
Greetings and welcome to Eggtown
TITLE
Possibly the most misnamed episode ever. Why call it Eggtown? Uh, the eggs Locke served to Ben? I kept looking for something to do with smart people. Never saw it. I guess that would be eggheads though. Help me out here folks.
THE WHOLE TOOTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TOOTH
Kate goes on trial, and we finally learn why she is free when she meets Jack at the airport in the Hoffs Drawler, I mean flashforward episode. We also learn what she meant when she said he will be wondering where I am. She was speaking of Aaron. In the trial when Jack testifies we learn the fake story they have told everyone about how Kate is a hero. By the way they do tell people they were on an island negating a theory I had that they would tell people there was no island. The strange thing about the testimony of Jack is that he makes Kate out to be the hero. But in the flashforward episode of Jack the people in the pharmacy thought Jack was the hero. So which is it? Or is it both? Or are all six heroes just for surviving? We did learn the identity of one more of the six. More on that later.
The story Jack tells was probably dreamed up by the Oceanic six before they got to mainland. In fact, they probably deliberately made Kate the hero in the story for the very reason that they knew she would face trial when she got back. Also there is an eerie comment from Miles when Kate knocks his head against a wall. He says to her, who knows maybe you did not survive the crash. This implies that those who faked the crash have already chosen who has died and who has survived the crash. That means they already know the six people they are going to rescue. Everyone else will not be rescued. Also the six they choose will be sworn to secrecy as a condition of their rescue.
I WILL HAVE THE GRENADE WITH THE TWO LAST EGGS
If this episode teaches us one thing that is to never order breakfast from John Locke. The breakfast of Ben gets uneaten and Locke smashes it against the wall. Notice that Ben is still in the mind game business as we saw when he was incarcerated in the hatch. Also the book that Locke gives to Ben is called VALIS by Phillip K. Dick a very well known science fiction writer. Some of his books have been made into movies such as Minority Report starring Tom Cruise and Imposter starring Gary Sinise and Adrian Monk. I just shook hands with an imposter can you give me a wipe? You can see a picture of some of the books of Phillip K. Dick at http://www.thephildickian.com/imagegallery.html. The other breakfast was a grenade Locke gave to Miles. It did not look tasty to me but to each his own I guess. I do not remember Miles even ordering a grenade. Was it on the menu? Maybe he thought it was a pineapple.
SAWYER I AM LATE, OR NOT
Ok, so Kate has a baby named Aaron. That is the shocker of this episode. There are two choices: Kate had a baby and it belongs to Sawyer or she got a hold of Aaron from Claire somehow. The baby most definitely belongs to Claire. Here is why. Kate has no problem taking alcohol from Sawyer which seems to be at least some indication that she is not pregnant or at least believes strongly that she is not pregnant. She tells Sawyer that most definitely she is not. Aaron was born in the fall of 2004 so that would make him just over 3 years old by spring 2008. Aaron looks like between 3 and 5 in the episode so it could be a little later in the future than that. But the most crucial thing here is that Aaron is not being raised by his biological mother. This is something the psychic warned Claire about in the episode Raised by Another. Now, Aaron is being raised by another. What will be the dire consequences of this? No way to know now just that the situation is much more severe than meets the eye. Now as to how Kate got a hold of Aaron. Here are my possibilities:
1. Claire gave her baby to Kate to take care of when for some reason Kate was leaving the island and Claire had to remain behind.
2. Claire is dead.
3. Kate stole Aaron from Kate.
4. Aaron went on a helicopter with Kate and it was full so Claire could not go on it. But the helicopter never went back for Claire for some reason.
Let us review each possibility:
1. This theory fits in well with my idea that the Oceanic six have already been chosen. If Claire is not one of the chosen ones then she will be forced to stay behind.
2. Another possibility since the body count on this show even for main characters is above average.
3. Kate may have killed her stepfather but she is not a thief. Despite the scene with Sawyer when Kate says would having a baby be the worst thing in the world I still do not think she stole him.
4. A distinct possibility or something like this.
Which theory do you like best or do you have another? Let me know. Another bombshell is that Aaron is one of the Oceanic Six. He has to be. He was on the plane. If he is not he should be. One problem though. If Aaron is one of the six that leaves room for only one more which would allow either Jin or Sun but not both. In this episode they both speak of getting off the island.
DONT CON ON ME
Notice how Sawyer is still up to his con man ways fooling Locke. Locke with all his wisdom has still not caught on to the fact that Sawyer is a genius con man. Remember how Sawyer conned the man in prison to give up the location of the money? Or his elaborate plan to get control of the guns using Charlie?
JACK I AM LATE, OR NOT
Why did the plane not arrive at the freighter? They surely left in plenty of time. We are reminded of the payload that Faraday had sent in and how late it was arriving. Whatever phenomenon caused the payload to be late could the same fate have befelled the helicopter making them even more late arriving at the freighter? At the moment this seems to be the most plausible theory. If the helicopter crashed into the ocean it seems doubtful they would have survived. There was the possibility that they did arrive and that the freighter people were lying but that choice seems to be negated by the previews for next week. They could have crashed on another island. Oh please no! Why is George Minkowski so distant? He seems hard to get a hold of. Given the large expense of the mission and the human lives involved you would think that he would be very communicative with his own people. The line was busy when Jack called. Who were they talking to? Their superiors perhaps?
BENJAMIN LINUS WORLD TRAVELER
We know now that there is much more to Ben than we have seen. For one thing he seems to be a world traveler as is evidenced by all the fake passports he has. Also he seems to be incredibly wealthy. Why else would Miles blackmail, I mean extort, 3.2 million dollars. Where did a guy who is living on an island get all the dough? And where is it? In a Swiss bank account? Who are the people after him and why? They must want to do him great harm is Ben is willing to pay that kind of cash to protect himself which he at least is considering doing by the way he talks to Miles. And what is with the amount 3.2 million? Why not just 3 million even? What is he Mister Monk? Or is he like Clint Eastwood wanting just A few Dollars More eh? Ben knows very well who Miles works for. I believe that it is either Alvar Hanso, Mister Widmore or both. One clue for this? When Charlie is in the looking glass and Penny asks him how he got this frequency. If DHARMA was in contact with Mister Widmore it would make perfect sense that the communication equipment would be tuned to a frequency Widmore would use. Also when Desmond meets Widmore in his office there is a painting on the wall with the word namaste on it. Let us not forget the two Portuguese gentlemen who detected an electromagnetic pulse from the island and immediately called who? That is right, Penny Widmore. Again the Widmore connection to the island. It seems clear to me that they were looking for Ben not Desmond. That is probably why the freighter people knew to look for Ben in that area.
IS THERE REALLY A FREIGHTER OUT THERE?
No, I do not think so. I think it is more of a military-like boat. Imagine the cost of sending out that kind of ship with this kind of hired crew. Naomi was military. It could have taken millions. Only an incredibly wealthy man could do it. They want to kill Ben because Ben fights against their evil schemes all over the world.
OTHER RAMBLINGS
Where is Nathan Fillion during the trial? Does he want to get back with Kate?
Jack still loves Kate and Kate would not mind getting back with Jack.
In the flash forwards will we find out if Claire was actually to meet another family in LA to take charge of her baby or was that a setup by the psychic to get her on the plane? One wild idea I have is that there was a family but they were related to Kate and that is how she ended up with Aaron.
In this episode the number of DHARMA brand products just keeps increasing. We see at least the following: DHARMA mug, spiced pork, and red wine.
Ben may oppose the evil DHARMA group because they are planning to take over the world or something. One idea is that they are planning to leak a deadly virus that only they have the cure to. This would make them filthy rich. This idea sure fits well with the statements made by Ben that he and his pals are the good guys. It also would explain how Sayid could ever work for Ben. Also fits with the dark versus light theme.
When Charlotte and Faraday are playing with the cards they are testing the psychic ability of Faraday. You can see a similar experiment done in the orientation video found in the Swan hatch. It makes me think that the island is at least a hot spot for psychic activity. I think the island enhances the psychic ability of some people such as Walt, Hurley, Kate, Jack, Locke and more. Like a lens focuses light and makes it brighter, the island focuses psychic energy. But the island could be even more than that. Evidence for this comes from the episode where we see the back story of Bernard and Rose where we see a certain region of Australia that seems to have healing properties. It may also explain the Hurley numbers. If Hurley believes that the numbers are bad luck and he has psychic ability then bad luck will follow him as his latent psychic powers cause bad events to happen around him. He is not even aware he is doing it.
Backgammon appears again. Dark versus light. They just wanted to remind us.
WILD TANGENT
Several westerns starring Clint Eastwood were actually filmed in Italy and were called Spaghetti Westerns. This includes the famous The Good The Bad and The Ugly.
Thanks for this thread, Lucky9teen! I don’t post much but I read it faithfully.
After last night’s episode I am so conFUSED!! lol
Last nights show as mind blowing, to be sure. It answered a lot of questions, but I for one, am having a hard time wrapping my brain around those answers.
If you’re like me, you like to read others summations and thoughts....so for really good recaps and (thoughts) about last night episode (and other episodes, for that matter)...see this website: http://darkufo.blogspot.com/
I know he was in “Saving Private Ryan”, and I think “The Wonder Years”, IIRC.
He is fun to watch, so quirky.
Thanks...I just thought he looked like Francis from ‘Malcolm’ but the more I look at him, I think he is thinner than the actor I am thinking of.
I don’t remember him from ‘The Wonder Years’ but I do from ‘Saving Private Ryan.’
I like Daniel and Desmond. I hope they stick around a while.
Thanks, I’ll take a look at that site.
BTW, what is the reference to “Black Rock”?
I just cannot remember at all!
Thanks!
BTW, could you put me on your ping list? The hubby and I are big fans of the show.
Many thanks!!!!
The Black Rock was name of the slave ship found in the middle of the jungle.
It contained the explosives that were used to open the hatch and it was where Locke’s father was murdered by Sawyer.
You’re On! :)
The LOST Report
My Serious, Logical Thoughts on The Constant
Welcome to the review of The Constant
TITLE
The constant in this episode is of course Penny. She is in both time periods that Desmond travels to 1996 and 2004.
QUANTUM CREEP
Theorizing that one could travel within his own lifetime Desmond Hume stepped into the quantum leap accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past facing a mirror image that was not his own. His only guide on this journey is Faraday, a physicist that only he can talk to about time travel. Now Desmond Hume leaps from past and future putting things right that once went wrong hoping that his next leap
will be the leap home
DEFINITELY MAYBE A CONSTANT
In mathematics a constant is a number that does not change. It is the opposite of a variable. Where a variable can take on whatever value works in an equation, constants can only take on one value. And there are many constants in our universe. The constants of Boltzman, Coulomb and the speed of light in a vacuum for example. The speed of light in a vacuum is about 300000000 meters per second. For Americans this corresponds to roughly 186,000 miles per second. This speed is the same throughout the universe. It is the same in the Andromeda galaxy and all other galaxies everywhere. And it never changes. It is a constant. Einstein showed that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. Today this is a law of physics. So remember, 186,000 miles per second is not just a good idea. It is the law.
I LOVE YOU TO DEATH. DEFINITELY MAYBE
Desmond is saved from death because he gets to talk to Penny in both of the time periods he travels to and from. You might even say that his love for Penny is what saved him. Interesting. We learn why nobody was answering the phone on the freighter on the regular frequency. It is because the communication equipment was partially destroyed. Was this caused by the spy of Ben on the freighter? Most certainly this spy unlocked the door so that Sayid, Desmond and George could get out to the communication room. If so then it adds credence to the belief that Ben and company are indeed the good guys. If so then will there be regret by Jack and company as to ever having fought them? Is it not Ben in that coffin when Jack goes to visit Hoffs Drawler? I feel for the others. Here they are trying to be the good guys and are so misunderstood. Everybody is fighting them. And the body count. Good grief. Sayid killed at least one Sawyer shot three of them I think including Tom. Sun killed one. So did Juliet. Ana Lucia killed Goodwin. Hurley ran over one. Charlie killed Ethan Rom. Eko and the tailies bumped off about three of them during a night attack. That is a minimum body count of at least 12 and may I remind you it all occurred in a span of just over 3 months. 13 if you count the pregnant other that died on the operating table. If they are the good guys then why are they not more up front? Sure would have saved a lot of lives. Is it because Ben is in hiding from Widmore and company?
ISLAND PROTECTION
The island may be surrounded by a permanent storm. This would have the effect of shielding the island from the outside. Also since trying to come to the island seems to knock out electronic equipment any attempt to get to the island could be very hazardous as we have seen. It already took out two helicopters: the one carrying Naomi and the one carrying Faraday and company. This just adds to the list. Let us not forget the ship carrying the French chick and of course flight 815. The Black Rock also although it had no electronic equipment.
Also even if you make it to the island you may become unstuck in time leading to you r death. Is this what happened to the crew of the boat of Danielle? She had to shoot them she said because of some disease they caught. But we have seen no evidence of a plague on the island.
BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK
The black rock is a 19th century ship that we first saw in season one when our gang went there to get dynamite. Remember when Arzt blew up? In The Constant we see a journal of a crewmember from that ship being auctioned off. Apparently what happened is the ship was attacked by pirates and one of them carried off this journal. Interestingly the pirate ship was apprehended off Madagasacar which is part of Africa. That still does not explain why the black rock is so far inland on the island. Notice the bidders for the journal include Mister Widmore and someone named Hanso. Do they know that the Black Rock is on the island or is this just a coincidence? Also if I may suggest an episode to anyone working at ABC. Let us see an episode about the Black Rock and how it got on the island. Even if it is just a flashback scene. Thank you. Do you not think it would be cool everyone? Let me know what you think?
DID HE OR DID HE NOT?
Did Faraday remember meeting Desmond in 1996 when he was on the island in 2004? Well, that is the question. If you say he did not remember then how do you explain the writing in his journal where he says if anything goes wrong Desmond Hume will be my constant? Faraday is sarcastic in the lab in 1996 when Desmond says he could have forgotten. Also Penny obviously remembered what Desmond told her in 1996. One could say that the future has been altered now, although that would disagree with the statement of Faraday he made in the lab when he said the future could not be changed.
Penny says that she knows about the island and she has been doing research there. DHARMA anyone? This supports my earlier assertions that Mister Widmore is involved in all this. I think Widmore built hatches and other places on the island and is working with Hanso. Funny that they would bid against each other in this episode. I think Widmore and Hanso sent the freighter to get Ben because he is their enemy. Widmore and Hanso are the bad guys. My best guess is that they want to release a deadly virus that only they have the cure for so they can make millions. Of course they did not tell Penny they sent the freighter which is why Penny seems not to know about it when she talks to Charlie in the looking glass. Yet she is certainly able to call the freighter indicating some kind of Widmore connection.
Does the time travel have anything to do with the seemingly other flight 815 found at the bottom of the ocean? Is this what happened to the flight in an alternate timeline? The answer is no and here is why. As previously stated you cannot change the future as Faraday said. Also It has been confirmed visually that the so-called pilot found dead in the plane underwater was definitely not the actual pilot of 815. It was someone else. This spells cover up.
YOU CANNOT HANDLE THE TRUTH
Desmond was surely exposed to radiation when he turned the key in the hatch. Why then do Jack and Juliet not tell this to Faraday when he asks if Desmond was recently exposed to radiation? It sort of looks like the beginning of the cover up. We know in the future that the Oceanic six will lie about what happened.
NO HURLEY NUMBERS
With all the numbers floating around in this episode the Hurley numbers are strangely absent. 2.342, 11 Hertz, paddle number 755 none of which are Hurley numbers. It is almost like they are deliberately avoiding putting the Hurley numbers in there so we will not try to find a connection.
FLOWERS FOR ELOISE
What we learn from Eloise is that the conscience can be transported through time and Faraday has the device that can do it. His device is surely electromagnetic in nature. The shield Faraday wears in his lab is similar to the lead aprons you might wear at an office of a dentist when you are getting X rays. This seems to indicate that the device of Faraday emits high frequency electromagnetic radiation such as ultraviolet rays or more likely X rays.
When Faraday blasts Eloise with radiation to unstick her in time we see an effect similar to what we saw when Desmond turned the key in the hatch. In both cases there was a noise and a purple color. Also recall that right after the hatch blew, Desmond could suddenly see the future another association with time. So what do we learn? We learn that exposure to a certain type of electromagnetic radiation causes temporal displacement side effects which include your conscience jumping through time or the ability to see the future or past. On a smaller scale we have seen evidence of such things before. Locke saw the beech craft plane carrying the brother of Eko crash. An event that took place in the past. I have not seen any indication that Locke has seen the future. But also Locke may not have been exposed to the kind and dose of radiation that Desmond was exposed to. Does this mean that the appearances of Walt, Charlie, the father of Jack, and so forth are actually them traveling through time or just perhaps their conscience? One evidence against this idea is when Charlie appears to Hurley at the institution. The dead Charlie tells Hurley that they need him now. If a past Charlie had gone into the future then he would not know what was taking place in the future. He would be disoriented like George Minkowski and Brandon. However Walt does look older when he appears to John Locke. A future Walt perhaps? Or is that just the actor getting older?
WILD TANGENT
This writer has never heard of a show called Quantum Leap and if there was one this episode did not resemble it in any way. Thank you.
In my novel Chaotic Planet: Origin I have an entire section on the theory of time travel called the Time Travelers Handbook. I present two different ideas about time travel: one where you can change the future (chaotic) and one where you cannot (deterministic). This episode seems to take the deterministic approach to time travel. You can buy a copy of my novel at www.qcms.biz.
Somehow Desmond ends up in a military prison. What would have been interesting if during his jump back in time he did something to cause himself to get sent there.
I want to see a flashback episode that shows how the monster was created. I say it was an experiment with nanobots that went horribly wrong and killed the experiments. Now the nanobots are tiny machines that have achieved sentience and travel the island as a swarm. The black smoke does seem to have some swarm characteristics. See the novel Prey by Michael Crichton.
Hy wht jst hppnd? My vwls dnt wrk!
You might even say that his love for Penny is what saved him.
It's probably truer to say that Penny's love for him saved Desmond. 8~)
The key to it all, IMO.
Thank you for your synopsis, it was enjoyable to read.
