Police: Zoo survivor told of standing on railing and yelling at tiger
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 17, 2008 | Jaxon Van Derbeken

One of the two survivors of the San Francisco Zoo tiger attack that left a 17-year-old fatally mauled told the victim's father that the three had yelled and waved at the animal while standing atop the railing of the tiger's enclosure, police said in court documents filed Thursday.

Paul Dhaliwal, 19, denied throwing anything into the enclosure or otherwise antagonizing the animal, according to an account contained in police investigators' request for a search warrant in connection with the Christmas Day attack that killed Carlos Sousa Jr. of San Jose.

Police armed with the warrant and seeking evidence that the men had taunted the tiger searched the 2002 BMW belonging to Dhaliwal's 23-year-old brother, Kulbir, on Wednesday. They also reviewed the brothers' cell phones for any photos they might have taken before the tiger attacked.

Police said they had recovered messages and images, but apparently nothing incriminating in connection with the tiger attack. Investigators seized a small amount of marijuana as well as a partially filled bottle of Grey Goose vodka from the car, according to the inventory that police submitted from the search.

They also found a kit commonly used to defeat drug testing, which included a vial of unisex synthetic urine, police said. Paul Dhaliwal was on probation stemming from a drunken driving incident and crash that occurred before the attack.

To be left alone from the ambulance chasers?

Not. The zoo is going to pay up and pay big. The city threw everything they had at these kids and came up with squat.

The zoo officials and the mayor are sure scared of this settlement. Wonder how many time they threaten the retirement of the officer.

These kids may have been up to no good. They all had marijuana and alcohol in their systems, and then this FTA:

"They also found a kit commonly used to defeat drug testing, which included a vial of unisex synthetic urine"

Just in case you didn't read this clearly enough:

the three had yelled and waved at the animal while standing atop the railing of the tiger's enclosure,...

Stupidity beyond belief. Are you a friend of these punks?

Have you been following the facts in this story?
Of course they acted like punks. But they thought they were safe, as they should have. Sorry but taunting a tiger should just get your a$$ thrown out, not killed.

That’s the way I read it. There isn’t a “railing” on the fence, AFAIK.

Not if I’m on the jury.

Yeah, but none of that really means so much to me, because it wouldn’t have mattered to Tatiana, ya know what I mean? Finding that they were *in her territory* makes a lot of difference.

That’s the chance you take teasing wild animals. I’m sure it added to the thrill. Until they got the surprise of their lives.

What men. Teasing an animal they thought couldn’t get out.

It’s easy to be a hero when you think it’s safe.

I’m impressed.....

Every day, in every zoo in America, people yell at the animals, roar at the lions, kaw at the eagles and hiss at the snakes.

And every person who visits the zoo expect the cages to keep the animals in, even if people make noises at the animals.

Zoo employees have reported for 40 years that tigers were jumping the moat at this particular enclosure.

Unless the victims unlocked the tiger’s cage, let something down the wall enabling it to climb out, the zoo is at fault.

Do you really think cages should only be strong enough for “non-enraged” animals?

No. The low wall was a chance that zoo officials took. We can only be thankful that no other people were killed by their negligence.

Can you link that for me? I never once read it.

yep - cowards. But if I thought for one second that any of the animals could ever get at me, I never would have gone to a zoo! Would you? First of all, the tiger area should have been better secure. Second, there should have been zoo employees, security, etc to see what the heck is going on at all times to have stopped this the moment it started.

Just how much of their own stupidity should the zoo have protected them from? My verdict, if I were on the jury--nothing for the tiger taunters. If I could, I'd toss them and their lawyers into another tiger enclosure, just to avenge the death of the tiger they caused to leap from its enclosure.
