To: RosieCotton; Ramius

My Outlook is ~still~ compacting. It seems happy, it’s not locking up or slowing down my machine in any way, but it’s been going more’n two hours now. Is this just the result of 8 years of not doing it and the sheer size of it? Or is it actually frozen? Ever done one that took a long time to do?

If it sounds like the hard drive is still chugging away, I guess I’d let it go awhile longer. If you deleted a ton, there may be a lot of space to recoup.

No, let it finish. Even if it takes all night, or your pst file may get corrupted.

This comes up in outlook, and is similar to something on the exchange server end of things. You can delete items from the database, but the space is still reserved for the db until you officially tell it to let go of the space. That’s what compaction does. It sounds like you’ve got more than a gig to recover, and that could take a while.
