Seriously, she bleached and dyed the burlap. She used to line them with nylon, rayon or silk.

Ah, the bleaching would break down the coarse fiber thereby, softening the fabric. The lining of silk is a nice touch. I bet she was a CHIC lady.

She learned a lot of her dress making skills when we were stationed in Naples, Italy. Her seamstress friends would show her a lot about dressmaking and without a pattern. She did dress well. Imelda Marcos had nothing on her when it came to shoes.
