I think the thread is worthy of a bump. Having read the information elsewhere, I have been taking 3,000 or 4,000 IU of D3 for a few days. The cost is low, the risk is small and the possible benefits are large (not just limited to flu prevention).

(Acerbic by nature, not nurture)
I have been talking 5,000 IU a day for two years. Blood work showed that I was very Vit D deficient.
Come to think of it, I have not had a cold or the flu during this time.

Why then does the flu hit the south just as bad as the north, see this map. Hit this
FLU MAP this is the current map (which is incredible in itself since this is already worse than most flu seasons and they don't even usually start updating this map until November as the flu really kicks in during Jan/Feb). But back to the main point, why are southern states which gets tons of sun year round being hit hard?

You ask a good question.
I’ll ask Cannell and see if he answers.

Perhaps this review article by Cannell and colleague might answer your question. The authors state that latitude is only one of many factors affecting vitamin D creation, and that vitamin D deficiency is common in Miami.

I remember this thread when it was hit the wires.
I attend trade shows for educators and am in schools nearly every working day.
I started taking D back then and until I stopped about 4 months ago, was rarely ill. I did get diagnosed with diabetes in January.
So, I now carry D3 supplements with me everywhere I travel and will report back on the efficacy of just adding supplements to my diet.
Thanks for the articles.
