Williams reinstated after 18-month suspension

ESPN.com news services

DAVIE, Fla. -- Ricky Williams' suspension ended after more than 18 months Wednesday when he was reinstated by the NFL, and the winless Miami Dolphins may welcome him back.

The 2002 league rushing champion was scheduled to fly to South Florida for a physical Thursday and meet with coach Cam Cameron, said Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg.

The first-year Miami coach, whose team is 0-9, said he talked with Williams by phone for "five or six minutes" Wednesday, but hadn't made a decision about activating him.

"I want to see where he is, and also let him know where we're headed, and we'll go from there," Cameron said.

Cameron has been mum for months regarding whether he would want Williams back. But Steinberg said he was encouraged by a phone conversation Wednesday with Matt Thomas, Dolphins general counsel-football administration.

"His indication was they were interested in Ricky," Steinberg said. "The spirit of the discussion was welcoming. It was a very similar discussion to what you would have regarding a draft choice or any returning player. The only contingent was whether they would have him practice Friday or Monday."

The people who said he’s a bust are morons, just as those who said Ronnie is a bust are morons.

Ronnie is a good RB, he just plays for a team that can’t run, pass or win.

He’ll have to transition to running back from running bags...

Could you give Shaun Alexander a pep talk?

The important news—which has gone unposted—is that the John Beck era begins Sunday.

That's John Dalton Beck. Don't bet against guys with middle names like "Dalton".

Could you give Shaun Alexander a pep talk?

It's not the age, it's the milage. The key, in my theory, is that my Elder Statesmen have taken a couple of years off, and then came back at an advanced age. It is the wear and tear of playing that ages them, you see. Since Ricky Williams quit playing at age 26, he has 26-year-old legs with the intelligence and maturity of a 31-year-old.

The problem with my theory, of course, is that he has the intelligence and maturity of a 31-year-old Ricky Williams...

But Shaun Alexander has racked up too many miles on the odometer, I am afraid. He's gotta be in pain with every step.

Due to the fact that I've been playing Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations for the past eight hours, this reply will be presented in the style of the little courtroom drama game that damn well did.

OBJECTION! The witness is claiming that Ronnie Brown, who plays the position of running back, "is a good RB." Simultaneously, the witness claims that Mr. Brown "plays for a team that can't run..."

This is clearly a contradiction, Your Honor! How can a running back be "good," yet play "for a team that can't run?"

This witness is unreliable!

Ok, I get your point. So, what we need really, is a guy that quit football at 22, had talent but no brains, but now about 8-10 yrs later should do a comeback? You know, I think you have the makings of an extremely popular tv show? Sounds like golf’s Big Break to me.

I’m hoping that, from 2008 through about 2019, John Beck’s middle name will be “F’ing.”

Well, Counselor, since Mr.Brown is currently injured and cannot play, no one else on the team can run. Seriesly though, when Dan Marino was around, Miami never had much of a running game either, and they did okay.

HOLD IT! By saying that Ronnie Brown plays for a team that can't run, you are directly implying, via the structure of the English language, that the team cannot run regardless of whether or not he is in the game at the time of the attempted running of the ball. Not to be confused with the running of the bulls, though Ronnie Brown's performance certainly mimicked that particular tradition, with the opposing defense being the wacky Spanish villagers.

But I digress.

Jesse Chatman just had a career day against Buffalo: 124 yards on 27 rushing attempts, 25 yards on 5 receptions. That sounds more than capable to me.

And, yeah, Dan Marino never had a very good run game to help him out. But he had some good WRs and a great offensive line. The real tragedy is how he never had a defense that could hold a lead: too often the Dolphins lost with ridiculous scores like 41-38.

Nah, I'm not going to detract further from Mr. Wright's obvious skill.

OMG, you’re killing me!

Had no clue they made a game like that. 8 hours, obvioulsy must be quite entertaining.

Remember to stretch out, you’ll get a kink in your neck!
