NASA Agrees to Search for Files Over 1965 UFO Incident[PA]

WASHINGTON — NASA has agreed to search its archives once again for documents on a 1965 UFO incident in Pennsylvania, a step the space agency fought in federal court.

The government has refused to open its files about what, if anything, moved across the sky and crashed in the woods near Kecksburg, Pa., 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Traffic was tied up in the area as curiosity seekers drove to the area, only to be kept away from the crash site by soldiers.

The Air Force's explanation for the unidentified flying object: a meteor or meteors.

"They could not find anything," one Air Force memo stated after a late-night search on Dec. 9, 1965. Several NASA employees also were reported to have been at the scene.

Eyewitnesses said a flatbed truck drove away a large object shaped like an acorn and about the size of a Volkswagen bus. A mock-up based on the descriptions of local residents sits behind the Kecksburg Volunteer Fire Department.

UFO enthusiasts refused to let the matter die and journalist Leslie Kean of New York City sued NASA four years ago for information.

"This is about the public's right to know," Kean said. "We would be doing this lawsuit regardless of whether UFO groups were interested in it or not. It's a freedom of information issue."

The agency has turned over several stacks of documents which Kean says are not responsive to the request, an argument that U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan agreed with.

In March, Sullivan rejected NASA's request to throw the case out of court, resulting in negotiations that led to the agency promising last week that it will conduct a more comprehensive search.

I haven’t been keeping track of Dr. Who, what was Captain Jack on that?

If there is anything to this, sounds like an entry vehicle like Soyuz to me.

Possibly. The first flight of a Soyuz capsule was in '66. May not be correct since the Soviet Space Program was shrouded in deep secrecy during that period. It could have been a Voskhod (which was their equivalent to Gemini).

Ya gotta love it - they put this character in Dr. Who as eye candy for the women viewers and they make him bisexual.

At least the female actresses in Torchwood are good looking.

You can’t say the casting crowd of Dr. Who/Torchwood are slouches in the casting department. Give Torchwood a chance. John Barrowman and the rest of the gang give great performances and dimension to the characters.

There is always BBC America on-line. I think they offer on-demand playback. Try Ultimate Force too. It is a fun over-the top “Unit” type show which I like a little better than “Unit”.

They might ask NASA but what did NASA have to do with it? They could ask the military but their records are lost in a fire.

Oh, I’ve been recording Torchwood since it came on BBC America last month. I admire the BBC because they have limited money to do Hollywood-style FX and actually have to write good stories.

Of course, they can show nudity so that’s one way to get around a bad script...

The BBC has always been good about workarounds due to budget and space constraints. Having good writers, actors, and directors help a lot.

I hope a soundtrack comes out similar to the one for current Dr. Who that I need to open up and spin sometime.

I would want a main track with narration and one without but I am not in charge.

Try Ultimate Force on Tuesday Nitro. It is pretty fun once an episode finally gets going.

That is the one thing about Brit shows, they aren’t the fastest starting things in the world but their typical high quality makes up for it.

Try this fanmade Ultimate Force clip set to the song “War”. It is pretty good.

“Mars Invades”, “The BLOB”...there was a whole slew of SF movies in the 50s. Then they transmutated to Star Wars, Close Encounters, short documentarities, the alien autopsy, crop circles...but really, it was in the BIBLE all along : there is seeing, then there is PERCEIVING...

Spoken intro with background music. Not very good.

Dec. 9, 1965. Several NASA employees also were reported to have been at the scene.

I'm thinking the eyewitness testimony, and if they were never there why fight it?

Yes, the OSI from DC was involved. The craft weaved and bobbed in the air before crashing

You mean .... almost as if it were swinging from a parachute?

Even if there were some NASA employees there they would not necessarily have any records. It was a military operation, and the military wouldn’t have records either.

If they were command module/re-entry/heat shield types, it would make perfect sense.
