Yes, I would expect the finished dish to be sweet with all that sugar but I was curious as to whether or not the fruit membrillo is naturally sweet or tart.

I have never tasted one so I really do not know but I suppose it somewhat like an apple - although they can be sweet or tart depending upon the variety. She did say they were a little firmer than apples.

I suppose the young lovers had to have good teeth too. :)
