There was one second left so they had to kick off. Auburn tried the rugby play, but teams have gotten better at defending it.

Why did the announcer keep insisting that if the pass had been incomplete, time would have run out? The ball was caught with about 4 seconds left, and the clock stopped at 1. If it had gone over his head, presumably it would have stopped with 1 or 2 seconds, and they could have attempted a field goal. Of course, it COULD have run out! Cf. The “subjunc-TV” in Douglas Hofstadter’s GEB - “Let’s see how that play would have looked if space were 8-dimensional.”
