I've seen this posted before and it is wrong. My nephew (now 21) was born out of wedlock and his parents never married but he carried his father's last name from birth. An unwed mother can name her baby (on the birth certificate) anything she wants.

Right, but Anna didn’t and couldn’t do that - she was dead. There must be a petition to change the name based on that DNA test. Obviously, it was granted to obtain a birth certificate and US Passport.
I know this is possible also. Even when married some women keep their maiden name and the children carry the fathers name. One person I know, four kids, same dad, never married all have the fathers name. It was his condition to the mother. He is very well off financially. To include them in a trust and Will, he wanted them to have his name. They both agree it was for the best of the children in the long run so she was never bothered by it at all.
