The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

It was my eighth straight green Christmas.

Down here it is 15,000+ green Christmases.

Big knife... Big spotlight, and roadside first aid kit put together by Ramius... good stuff :~D

Oooh, neat stuff. What brand of knife is it? It looks like a modern version of the old-time "camp" knife.

Santa is using the US mail to deliver my stocking stuffers. Except for a bunch of bits that showed up in my document file. The screener to the Stargate SG1 movie.

I just watched a very passable version of "I am Legend". Downer. I tried to watch a videocam capture of "Golden Compass". The quality of the image was so awful I couldn't give the movie the critical analysis I had intended.

Morning everyone!

Didja survive?

Our day was pretty good. I don't know how to take it exactly but "on strike" Christmas was as well received as "homemade extravaganza" Christmases. I might have to strike again next year. Today we're on to the second leg of our Christmas triathalon. (1. Christmas day, 2. Mom's visit, 3. New job)

Mornin’. Thought about sleeping in, but remembered how quiet the house would be if’n I went ahead and got up.

Busy day here yesterday. And I’m still fighting a cold and now laryngitis (but that did get me out of a lot of small talk yesterday). Course that meant I didn’t get to drink as much wine as I’d hoped.

Sister Mary Hamburner, her husband and his mom (in her early 90s) were here yesterday. Let’s just say I told wife that all the issues with Nana could have been worse.

Nana was here, but is much more feeble than she should be. She’s had problems with her feet and ankle and up until last week had basically seemed to give up on walking. Wife had a come to Jesus meeting with her. One of the aides at the home actually said “I had no idea she could walk.”

This morning I’m googling up Wii remotes and color settings. Can’t get the second remote to work and can’t get the color settings right (all blues and greens). I should have known the set up was too easy.

And oh yeah...I got a new winter jacket, a denim jacket and a counter top wine cooler. Jr. got me a nice winter scarf in the Virginia Tech colors.

Jr. done us proud and made his mama cry on Christmas morning. Jr. always gets a new nutcracker and Luke gets a new snow globe every Christmas. Since they knew Not Valerie and I have a collection of Santas, they got us a very nice Santa and Jr. said “We talked it over and thought because we have the nutcracker and snow globe tradition that you should get a Santa every Christmas.”

That boy just may turn out all right after all.

Happy Boxing Day! Back later.

Winmag... the knife is a Kershaw... I think he got it at Cabella's. :~)

I tried to watch a videocam capture of "Golden Compass". The quality of the image was so awful I couldn't give the movie the critical analysis I had intended.

Ah... I remember with quite a bit of nostaglia watching any bad version of LoTR movies we could find... remember? :~)

That it was. Although at one point yesterday afore the (second set of) guests arrived, Not Valerie said “let’s not do this next year.”

It was a beautiful moment.

Is she better than you are at actually sticking to these pronouncements? :~)

We’ll see. ;-)

Although right now she’s also saying she’s not doing the show next year. That’s a way bigger step than me saying it.

Okay, this isn’t a PC issue, but it’s a technical issue that maybe one of you can help me with (or point me to the right place). Googling and reading the gamers forums [shudder] isn’t helping.

I got the second remote working (amazing what actually reading the instructions will do).

But I can’t get the color resolution right on the HDTV. It’s all in blues and greens. We bought the HDTV component cables with the system. Graphics resolution is fine, it’s just the color. I tried adusting it on the TV, but that didn’t help. I can adjust the tint, but I can’t get anywhere near true color.

Thoughts?

TV is broke?

Just a thought.

No. Problem is just with the Wii. TV is fine for regular viewing and the DVD.

Hmm, is there more than one cable involved, going into the TV? Used to be you could have three or four different ones, one for each color... in that kind of setup it was easy to get color cables swapped and wind up with goofy colors being displayed.

There’s nothing wrong. Smurfs are ~supposed~ to be that color. :-)

So did you try out that light? Does it work OK? Can you just point it up to the sky and wave it around so I can see it?

...but really... if it’s just the Wii, then it’s gotta be something with the cabling or the Wii itself. Is there an alternate way to cable it? Say, an HDMI cable instead of the component cables?

That light is really bright! Heh... I don’t think it would be capturable in a picture so you’ll just have to see for yourself this weekend

There’s also something about how super white it is. Last night when we shone it on the snow it almost hurt to look at it was so white. But the other thing about the super white light is that things we illuminate have color. Ordinarily when we spotlight the horses at night the colors are very muted, but with this light you can see these bright Bay horses with their GREEN and PURPLE blankets. It’s different than regular flashlights.
