We have no idea. I don't know if it got hit by a car or just died or what, but there it was, 15 feet off the side of a Forest Service road. I guess the Forest Service decided it was easier to just dump a load of lime on top of it than to have to deal with trying to move a rotting carcass. But they didn't do a very good job of dumping because the whole hind end of it was still sticking out of the lime. Talk about rank! Whew! It was NASTY! The smell was freaking all the horses out too. They wanted to get past it as fast and as far away from it as possible. Hope nearly took to the ditch to get around it.

Did I tell you guys before how they blew up a horse who died on trail with dynamite? They figured smaller pieces would break down and get taken away by scavengers quicker than the big carcass would... and they were afraid of attracting bears or cougar to it, who might get protective of it, right on the trail...
