Opening up an inside rein means that it is slightly more loose than the outside rein. By opening up your inside rein you allow a place for your horse to move to the inside. An "opening". Just as if you opened your outside rein, your horse would pop his shoulder to the outside. When someone says a "loose rein", the rein isn't loose enough to be floppy, but the outside rein might be a little stronger than the inside rein.

In general, you want an even contact on both reins, so that the horse doesn't pop his shoulder out or tip to the inside or the outside. Even contact allows the horse to be balanced. Where it gets touchy is when you are dealing with the issues of bending and collection. In that case, you generally have a stronger outside rein, used in conjunction with your inside leg. Your outside rein becomes a "wall" so that your horse can't pop his shoulder and tip his nose in, become all unbalanced.

But really, no one talks about seat and legs being far more effective for steering and speed control than pulling the horse around with the reins.

Clear as mud? :-D

Opening up the rein I think I understand, that would be to open your fingers or move your hand forward to allow the horse to take that slack. The horse should seek contact, so if you open the rein the horse should reach forward.

This is what I meant by having a looser rein. Squeezing on the rein, or relaxing your fingers to relax your hand. The horse should be able to feel that difference. That's the degree of looseness that we're talking about. Good Job Hair. :-D

Well, that’s what I’m trying to find out, if that means Bend Or was in his bloodlines, or if those spots can show up in any bloodline. I did read on one of the sites that they are “fairly rare” so I’m thinking he does have BO in his line.

That would explain his conformation (IMO, he doesn’t look TB, but he doesn’t look like a foundation QH either) and that tiny bit of hot streak he’s got, altho on his papers it’s straight foundation breeding.

Yeah, WB was were I first started catching that technique, but there is a thread over there now, where it’s being talked about.

A girl is having trouble keeping the horse on the rail, and they are telling her outside rein, inside leg, and I just don’t agree with that, but I don’t do English:), so was just wondering.

I liked the second one because there is just more color in it..the horse, that one tree that is a bit yellow, all seem to just really pop out of the picture.

The first one is a great on of the sky tho:)

Ok, yeah, that helped..

LOL...that is not what I had pictured as opening up the rein:)...I was thinking something like plow reining, and I just couldn’t figure an English rider doing that.

I think when WB was talking about the tighter inside rein and looser outside, it was for when there was a problem....

WB being she-who-must-not-be-named? Or our own WB?

LOL, not our WB, she’s Hair...I don’t know how many times I’ve typed something to “Hair” over there and had change it. Luckily I’ve always caught it before posting, but it could be just a matter of time:)

You’re right about the color in the 2nd one. I don’t know what it is about the quality of light that comes in under storm clouds like that but it’s really clear or something and just seems to make things stand out and seem in sharp focus. And maybe it’s just the dark cloud background that makes it pop, but whatever it is, it’s really cool.

I've posted to her a couple of times and done the same thing. (But caught myself) One of the things that I'm worried about doing if I ever do get to meet everyone, is calling them by their screen names instead of their real names. :-)

What’s plow reining? I read that thread over on the horse forum, and if anything it sounds like a school pony has got her number. :-)

LOL!! I'll bet you'd get some really strange looks if you let it slip. It's funny when BladeRider and I are talking out on the trail about our conversations here and we talk about what Hair or MissTargets or Beaker said and our other riding buddies just kinda look at us like we're crazy.

The whole time I was in Wa, I called her Hair, and I call 2J, 2J...I’m sure when they are here we will all call each other by their screen names, except for me:). I believe some will be surprised at Mack’s real name:) When I was in WA and first called him by his name, Hair was like whose that:)

Heh, me too! I know your’s and Hair’s real first names, but it seems strange calling you that. So if anybody calls me Frog, well that’s fine with me. I’ve got an uncle and an uncle-in-law that go by that name anyways so it’s not like I haven’t heard it before.

I do the same thing, and people look at me too like what are you talking about:).

One time when 2J was at Jenny’s shop I introduced her to the newspaper lady as 2J, without thinking then caught myself...

Mack just asked me what Hair’s real name was:), he doesn’t think it fits:)

Plow reining is pulling the reins out, to make a turn. It would open up a shoulder:)

That name was Mack’s invention:)...Years ago when we first got on line it was with a WebTV computer. The thing could only handle one e-mail address. So when I started posting I posted under his name. For a long time we did not identify ourselves, that there was two of us.

We mostly posted on a religion topic thread that went on and on for years, like this Saddle Thread has.

One morning I got up and clicked on, and someone was giving us, altho they did not know we were an us:), he!! for something he said. I posted something unrelated, and the poster that was fussing came on and wanted me to answer his post, that was when I let everyone know there was 2 of us, and I started signing my posts:)

I’ve just never thought at this point to get my own name.
