I can’t program the VCR. I can't either. It doesn't seem to have a compiler. Or an editor, for that matter. Or debugger. Or even a keyboard -- how is one to write software for it?

You have to wave your fingers in particular patterns in front of an IR source in order to input the code. It's an acquired talent.
