Been trying to do that, somewhat.
But the characters themselves interfere with the writing.
NNB could explain that better than I could, probably.

Isn't it best (my creative writing course talking now), to write up character sketches, like, everything about a character....on a piece of paper (or however many it takes)....get them "out of your head" and onto paper....then just start writing the story....

I'd guess if your characters are interfering with the writing, then you're not telling their story.

You have to remember to be the dispassionate, non-judgemental observer and recorder.

If you insist on trying to drive the story in a direction of your choosing, they will be balky and uncooperative.
