The Wide Land
Wide the sky over the land
bluer then the far and distant sea
a land as wild as the heart may be
a place where common is banned
Mountains reach for the sky
shouldering the plains aside
setting their tree shrouded tide
cascading above the land they fly
White capped crowns on noble brows
sparkle like a royal gem laden crown
while far below, the plains bow down
humbled by the gilded monarchs scowls
A tiny Pika sprints among the craggy rocks
and small flowers dress the meadows bright
and as this wide land glows in noons light
clouds race the sky as swift as a startled fox
Bison lowly wander as in a living tide
and mule deer ghost among the high pines
an eagle seeks the world below for some sign
of dinner in the grasses where it hides
I love this wild wide land, and know it well
the eyes reach is beyond imaginations grasp
where promise brings forth from one a gasp
and only distant days the full story tell
Wind whispered wonders tell of this place
where free souls roamed to challenge fate
a testing place to forge strong men and mates
a better place for the strong of the human race
Seek the sunset with an open eye and learn
walk the paths only you will make
and take the chances only you will take
answer the burning urge that in you yearns
Wandering eyes? You mean like Marty Feldman’s eyes?
It has been said,
If you snooze you lose.
