Humilation by a teacher in front of their peers for something not punishment is cruel.

I just asked my daughter at lunchtime what the awards were called.

They're called "Roasters" they are supposed to deprecate the recipient, no one is left out. Everyone got razzed about something.

Notice from the article the boy said the teacher put US down, he wasn't being singled out.

I guess from the teachers perspective, their only real misstep in all this was their assumption that they knew their audience, obviously they didn't.
