"This week I was visting my fiance's parents in Capitola [and] we were eating dinner on the back porch when we noticed this "object" sort of hovering in the sky. The camera was still out from earlier so I grabbed it and tried to get some clear shots of it. It took off over the roof shortly after, so I ran into the street in front of the house to follow, trying to get more shots without wobbling around too much (which was harder than it sounds). It then came in lower over a telephone pole, where I was able to get a few more pictures, before it finally took off into the distance pretty fast. I thought it was gone but noticed it was still visible, so I grabbed a few more pictures.

It’s simply a toy to me that I am unfamiliar with.
Call it what you like! ;)

I still say its a childs toy controlled by a remote control. That somebody local built it, I'll agree with. That it's remotely controlled, sure. That it's a child's toy? Something of a stretch. If it is a toy, I've never seen one of these for sale at FAO Schwartz.
And I'm not seeing a propeller on it, either. I wonder how it's staying up there...

Four different sets of photos taken by four different photographers, on for different locations at four different times.
Each show the same core structure, the appendages seem to be (dare I use this word?) evolving...

I don’t know what it is but maybe we need one on our border :-)!!!! Don’t want to drag the thread down, but the joke seemed fitting :-). Great pictures of the device.

If I'm wrong it could be even more interesting!

Photographers never mentioned if it moved air, trees etc.
Didn't know it was legal to put stuff in the air sans call letters.

Even Dick Cheney could hit that thing with a 12 gauge...

If that’s Phun with Photoshop, then it’s some impressive work. The shadows and ambient light are nicely done.

YOu can easily modify existing toys and put a different “body” on them leaving the rest of it intact.

It could be a childs model of a spaceship with some changes. I don’t know if you remember kids putting together model cars ... but something on that order with some odd parts glued to it.

I was thinking of getting out in the woods again this afternoon. Better take the camera just in case I see the Sporktesian Cruiser again.

It could be a childs model of a spaceship with some changes. I'm thinking that, if your theory is correct, the perpetrators of the hoax would have to start with some sort of toy that can actually fly. Such exist, but it narrows down the options considerably. That ain't no Barbie Dream House.

I think the photos through the powerlines seem a little too deliberate. Even an amateur such as myself would have the presence of mind to take the extra 2 or 3 steps to get a clear shot.

It might be a Photoshop job. But if so, as someone already pointed out, it would have to be a really GOOD Photoshop job.
