The tiger must have slashed a femoral artery or something?
He was frightened and he felt faint and he tried to say an act of contrition and he remembered how it started but before he had said, as fast as he could, “Oh, my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee who art worthy of all my love and I firmly resolve ... ,” he felt too faint and he was lying face down on the floor and it was over very quickly. A severed femoral artery empties itself faster than you can believe.

— Hemingway, The Capital of the World.

While running the bayonet training course,a soldier somehow managed to impale his leg with his bayonet mounted on his M-16.I was on the scene in no time.Being quite a distance from the base,Medivac was called in.When I got to his position, blood had already saturated his clothes.I cut the fatigue pant leg and was stunned at the amount of blood pumping out of the wound. It was shooting out at an incredible pace.I tied my belt as tight as I could and all it did was slow down some.I then used my bayonet scabbard to tighten the belt as much as possible. It finally slowed down to a manageable situation.
It took forty five minutes for the chopper to get there and i was very concerned about the blood loss.He came through after numerous operations.I can say,I was amazed at how far a femoral artery can pump blood. And it would not take long to bleed out.The next time i saw this soldier, his leg was half the size of his other one.
