De La Hoya vs. Mayweather LIVE THREAD May 5th, 2007

Posted on 05/05/2007 11:53:47 AM PDT by Vision

Pay per view starts at 9pm. This is the fight of the year.

Mayweather is probably the best fighter in boxing right now. It will be great to see how Oscar shows up for this; it may determine the rest of his career.

Right now tradebetx has it to win:

Mayweather -199
Hoya +170

Listening to Mayweather speak after the fight, it’s pretty easy to dislike the guy. Lots of skill, but little or no class.

He’s a jerk. A skilled jerk, but still a jerk. I don’t believe that he’ll really quit. He needs the attention too much.

Until we know what it’s like to face the mano a mano in the ring, it’s not fair to comment on the emotions after a fight of this magnitude.

The truth is told more after the final bell. There’s little question Mayweather had a new respect for Oscar when the final bell sounded.

Oscar may have lost but he showed something tonight. He really showed the champion he is by fighting to win right up to the final bell.

DeLaHoya showed a lot of class, even in “defeat”. Plus, he definitely won as far as the bank is concerned and the PPV money should be outstanding on top of everything else. Not bad for an “old guy” fighting a younger man. A 30 y.o. DeLaHoya would have knocked Mayweather out. DeLaHoya is still the champ!

Mayweather Sr. didn’t come right out and say it, but I think he disagreed with the decision.

It was a good fight and a close decision. De la Hoya was more aggressive and the stronger puncher; Mayweather was more accurate. But, after it was all over, Mayweather is the one saying he’s retiring. Considering how Mayweather was massively favored to win it, he barely won (according to the judges) on a decision...there’s no way he could have beaten DelaHoya in his prime.

Hey, you should not talk to yourself when looking in the mirror.
Bad for your self-esteem.

"Fight of the year!"

So was it all that you hoped it would be?

It was.

Mayweather came out in Mexican flag shorts...which I don’t understand. Hoya fought like a tiger. At the end Mayweather is talking about retirement and not sure if he deserved the win. I’m wondering if Oscar will keep fighting cause he looked great. A little more drama would have been good but it was a boxing milestone.

There’s no need to hype talent like that.

Agreed. Mayweather's a very good fighter - or should I say boxer - but nowhere near the quality many claim he is. His biggest wins came against a past his prime De La Hoya (and it was a controversial decision), Zab Judah (a 2nd-tier boxer at best), Arturo Gatti (a glorified club fighter), Jose Luis Castillo, and Diego Corrales. ....and only the wins against Gatti and Corrales were impressive. (The others were boring UDs where Floyd refused to mix it up). Not exactly a resume that would cause one to compare him to the all-time greats. ....which many ignorant boxing observers have been doing lately.

Well, looks like Oscar bit the bullet in yet another split and “controversial” decision. Do you suppose that could lead to a re-match? lol Get your wallet out, and get your money ready to put down on that, Rooster! :)

De LaHoya and Bernard Hopkins are partners in “Golden Boy Productions”.

I’d like to see Hopkins vs. Mayweather.

As stated at the start of the thread I think Hopkins is far the superior middleweight to Mayweather. The most impressive thing about Floyd is the number of divisions he has been champ in. But he’s out of his league in the middleweight division, and Hopkins is an awesome talent.

Based on what I saw in this fight I think he would destroy Mayweather.

I thought overall, the fight was rather dull.
De La Hoya has the anoying habit of coasting most of the round and then turning it up for the last 15-20 seconds. Hoping that the judges will view favorably on his late round output.

The last 4 rounds of the fight were terrible for De La Hoya.
All in all, that wasn’t even the fight of the week.

Best fight I have seen in a decade was Gatti v Ward. Paulie Ialla V Johnie Tappia was a fantastic fight.

Mayweather is a good boxer but not that exciting. One punch and then slips to the side.

I lost money betting on Rcoky Balboa v. Clubber Lang in their first fight in Rocky 3. I thought it was a sure thing!
