Oh, the first thing many newly sober guys do, after they’ve sponsored one sponsee, is go get their MSW so they can be a counselor. Egos get swelled as they see recovery working.
A year or so down the road, the men are separated from the boys and not many stick it out. It’s one thing to try to help someone who wants help, all on a voluntary basis, and quite another to deal with people sent by the courts, who just want someone to sign their court slips.
Absolutely. It’s a tough road to hoe, and I admire the ones who stick it out. You seem to see it so often, that when one begins the road to recovery, they almost feel “high” from it, and with good reason. I remember seeing Anna in an interview at some point after what was, I think, her first rehab effort, and she was so enthusiastic and said she was never going down the road of addiction again. More often that not, sadly, they revert. It takes a lot of time and constant hard work to guard from the temptations and learn how to live life with no crutches. Well, chocolate maybe....
