I suppose there were entry fees for this race. GIbson and Howard had an alliance? 50/50 split? Would just like to know?

I'd also like to know what Howard has on Captain Gibson. Ah...probably the "Phony" wedding +. You know there's a video someplace.

An Editorial.....

A King-sized Blunder

During the height of their popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, King Eric and His Knights were one of the most renowned group of entertainers in the country. Their success was primarily due to the entrepreneurial skills of their leader, Eric Gibson, a born promoter who invested considerable time and energy in marketing the group.

The band’s popularity, however, waned over the years and essentially it has all but disappeared, but King Eric has remained very much in the spotlight as one of the principal promoters of Family Island regattas.

Over the recent Emancipation Day holiday weekend, Gibson sought to do what he has done so well for most of his life: provide a good vehicle for promoting the Acklins regatta by prominently associating it with the name of the late Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith, with whom his entire family apparently developed a close relationship prior to her tragic death in February.

Gibson’s involvement with the regatta was as chairman of the Acklins Regatta and Homecoming Committee and as a consultant for the Government on regattas. Published reports indicated that the regatta was given a “pink theme,” in recognition of pink being Anna Nicole Smith’s favorite color.

What’s more, Gibson reportedly arranged for a special Anna Nicole Smith race to be a part of the regatta, despite a report that Anita Collie-Pratt, president of the Acklins Trade and Development Association, who appointed Gibson chairman of the Regatta Committee, had instructed him that there would be “no Anna Nicole race in Acklins.” For ignoring Collie-Pratt’s instructions, Gibson was dismissed as chairman of the Acklins Regatta Homecoming Committee “for embarrassing the committee and the people of Acklins by turning their recent regatta into an Anna Nicole spectacle.”

The decision by Collie-Pratt to dismiss Gibson should be applauded. Using Anna Nicole Smith’s name to promote the Acklins regatta was not only an embarrassment to the people of Acklins, but to the people of the entire Bahamas. When King Eric’s son, Shane Gibson, who was the then Minister of Immigration in the former Progressive Liberal Party Government, fast-tracked the Anna Nicole Smith’s application for permanent residency in late 2006, The Bahamas was catapulted into a vortex of negative publicity, which included photographs published in The Tribune on February 11, 2007 — and subsequently around the world — showing Smith lying clothed in bed in an embrace with Shane Gibson.

What has to be kept in mind here is that it has been almost one year since Anna Nicole’s 20-year-old son, Daniel Smith, mysteriously died in her hospital room at Doctors Hospital on September 9 while visiting his mother and his new-born sister, Dannielynn, and the inquest into that death has still not yet been completed in our courts. Surely, if members of the international media were to again focus the amount of attention that they did on The Bahamas earlier this year during the court-battle to determine who was actually the father of Dannielynn, questions would almost certainly be raised about the slow pace of the Bahamian judicial process with regard to the inquest into Daniel’s death.

One would have thought that rather than again thrust The Bahamas into another round of negative exposure worldwide, those responsible for the first set of bad publicity would have used better judgment than what King Eric did at the Acklins regatta.

Collie-Pratt did the right thing in dismissing him, and the Government should do the same and fire him as a consultant.

Thanks for posting the King Eric stories. I’m afraid to click on any links, as the dreaded popups/unders are continuing, sometimes worse, sometimes better - today *bad.*

He tried to pull that with the Nassau regatta on Valentine’s Day, right after ANS died, then announced that he had decided to *wait* until a later regatta to do it. It was quite obvious no one wanted an ANS race at that time, by the comments I was able to read then.

Acklins is an out-island where his family comes from. He goes back there and does promotions for them. They have absolutely no connection to ANS at all - except for King Eric.

She attended one local Nassau regatta in January (the one where Dannielynn was passed around to total strangers as ANS and HKS watched the race on a chase boat), because King Eric and Brigitte thought the outing would do her good. She had been holed up at Horizons, grieving after Daniel’s death.

It supposedly was because of comments she made about the boats that HKS took her to FL to look for one to buy. (Not that the Cracker was a sailboat or racing boat, lol.)

I remember the reports said she had a friend with her who was visitng from London. I also wondered if KE was aboard with them.

It’s funny that as big a promoter as he is in The Bahamas, only Gerlene, his ex-wife, and Brigitte, his companion, have appeared on TV in interviews about Anna’s death - but nary hide nor hair of King Eric. He is the only one who knows about Howard’s whereabouts in the hours preceding Anna’s death - and the actions/timeframe that are still unknown to the public.

*One of these days* ...

Thanks for posting that. I can’t get around the ‘Net yet to gather info, so I appreciate any news brought to this thread so I can keep up with happenings.

This makes no sense to me: “ ... two separate injunctions issued by the Supreme Court last year regarding the Horizons residence – one barring Mr. Thompson and his agents from entering the premises, and the other barring anyone from taking any action at all with regard to the residence. ...”

And especially the part about “ ... Lawyers for the estate ... intended to have ... Mr. Thompson jailed for contempt of court. ...”

So, now Howie is the Bahamian royal police? That is sick. Corruption beyond imagination. “How to Steal a $1 Million House without Breaking a Sweat.”

*Kodachro-o-me ... gives us such nice, bright colors ...*

I would not be surprised to learn that HKS was behind naming it the ANS Regatta and changing the colors used by King Gibson to pink. Betcha he had a deal with the media to pay him (HKS) mega bucks to film the race. He doesn’t hesitate to use ANS name and fame in any manner to make himself a few dollars...the man has no shame. It’s obvious he’s adverse to doing an honest days work. I hope the people of the Caribbean Islands are tired of the stench that HKS brings to their shores. He's helped give South Florida a questionable name too...everywhere he goes, there is chaos and shame.

SPRING POINT, Acklins – Howard Stern, husband of the late Anna Nicole Smith, was appreciative for the new sloop Anna Nicole, that sailed for the first time at the 30th Annual Acklins Regatta and Homecoming this past holiday weekend.

One month ago, ‘King’ Eric Gibson appointed several young sailors and boat builders under the age of 20 to refurbish his Lucayan Lady sloop. When they were done, the sloop’s color was changed from green to pink and renamed Anna Nicole. Stern, who attended the Acklins regatta, said he had mixed emotions about watching the boat sail for the first time.

“It was hard for me to come here, but at the same time, I am grateful to Shane Gibson and ‘King’ Eric for honoring her this way. So, it was fitting for me to support the idea, the people and the island of

Acklins at the same time. I know this is something that Anna wanted because we discussed this in January. It made me think about how things could have been if she was still alive to see this,” said Stern.

Overall, the Anna Nicole finished second behind Lee Armbriser’s Good News and ahead of Dentrick Miller’s Sea Star. According to Stern, it is the effort that counts.

“It does not matter to me if the Anna Nicole wins or loses because I know that Anna would have wanted ‘King’ to be the captain of her boat. When I saw the boat for the first time I really liked it and I know Anna would have loved it too, mainly because of the color scheme,” explained Stern.

When Stern arrived on the island, the Gibson family gave him a tour. He got a chance to see the house where Bahamian music legend ‘King’ Eric grew up, sampled some native fruits like sugar apple, guinep and tamarind. He was also treated to a celebratory breakfast to launch the new Anna Nicole sloop.

“I really appreciated the hospitality of the people on Acklins Island. This is a fantastic island and the people are very friendly. I really wish that Anna could have been here. This island is a hidden jewel. I hope that staging a race in her honor and the publicity it will gain, turns out to be good for the economy here,” added Stern.

Acklins is expected to gain international media exposure this week as the E! Entertainment channel was in town to cover the regatta. Although Gibson did not win the A-class, he congratulated the overall winner, the Good News.

“Lee Armbrister has the leading boat for ‘Boat of the Year’, so if you really want to beat him you have to come strong. Overall, I am happy with how Anna Nicole performed. We worked out all of the kinks and now we are ready for the next regatta. For the most part, we are happy after pulling off another major regatta in Acklins that was very successful. The people who came down seemed to have enjoyed it,” Gibson said.

The above was an article.

Below is a comment by a reader:

Acklins, where the regatta was held is a smaller island that is also a part of the bahamas. it is beautiful and the billionaires, millionnaires come there with their finest yachts for boating races,etc. they also go to EXUMA, another “outer island” as they call them, and BIMINI, ANOTHER OUTER ISLAND ABOUT TEN MINUTES FROM FLORIDA BY PLANE.

so i imagine howard will be tryhing his luck at these other prominent islands where the wealthiest people in the world gather from time to time. David Copperfield owns his own privte island among these bahamas islands too, to give you an idea.

Bet the boat was ALWAYS in Howard's name. A gift I suppose.

If he can get his money out of it with the publicity, he'll sell it to Gibson for $1. Wonder what he has on King Eric!!

What happened to the boat he and AN were buying in Florida? I believe King was suppose to pilot the boat to the Bahamas after it was restored. Howard was supposedly going to check on the boat the day Anna died, but haven’t heard anymore about the boat since. It will be interesting to learn who’s playing who with the Gibson’s versus Howard?!! Unless there is a deal in the works, I don’t know why the Gibson’s would want anymore bad publicity if they plan to stay in the Bahamas. I would think there had to be a monetary advantage for them to involved with HKS any longer. However, I suppose you could say, “corruptness begats corruption”, and you’d probably be right.

Six Months After Anna Nicole’s Death, Stern Says Bahamas Is Home

By Quincy Parker

If her 20-year-old son Daniel Wayne Smith were alive, Howard K. Stern says there is no doubt that the late Anna Nicole Smith would be alive today.

Mr. Stern, who was Ms. Smith’s lawyer, and later her lover, is staying in the million-dollar Eastern Road mansion the two shared before the model/actress died in February, and says he will not leave Ms. Smith and her son Daniel here alone.

Daniel Smith died in September 2006, just three days after his little sister Dannielynn was born to Ms. Smith at Doctors Hospital. He was buried at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery.

Speaking exclusively with the Journal from the waterfront mansion, known as ‘Horizons,’ Mr. Stern ruminated on what effect Daniel’s death had on Ms. Smith.

“That changed life forever,” Mr. Stern said.

“Daniel was Anna Nicole’s reason for living. Daniel was more than her son. She had Daniel when she was very young and he was literally her whole life. She used to say that he was her whole reason for living, and he was the difference between her and Marilyn Munroe,” he said.

“So when Daniel passed away, it changed everything.”

Mr. Stern said it would be an understatement to say that Daniel was “a huge part of my life or Anna Nicole’s life.”

“She overcame everything in her life. She’s had a lot of different battles in the past, but I truly believe that losing her son was the one thing that she couldn’t overcome. She had nightmares literally all the time,” he recalled.

“There’s no question in my mind that if Daniel was alive Anna Nicole would be alive today.”

After a protracted, often bitter court battle, Ms. Smith’s remains were shipped from Florida, where she died suddenly of complications due to drug interaction, to Nassau, and she too was buried at Lakeview.

Mr. Stern also explained why he chose to stay in The Bahamas, where he said he’d eventually apply for permanent residency.

“When she passed, I obviously had a fight to bring her back here to her son, which is where she wanted to be buried,” he said. “I’m not going to leave them here alone, and also the people have opened up their arms to me since she passed away.

“I think the people of The Bahamas are wonderful, with a couple of notable exceptions, but I think there are ulterior motives to that. I want to stay here, and right now I’m not a (permanent) resident so I go back and forth, but eventually, if the people of The Bahamas would accept me, I do want to stay here permanently.”

He reiterated that Ms. Smith had come to The Bahamas to escape the media circus. That goal was achieved, he said, until word of Ms. Smith’s pregnancy leaked out.

“We’d go to Poop Deck [Restaurant] maybe once a week to eat. Anna loved it here. She absolutely loved it here,” he said. “Anna loved the people of The Bahamas and this was going to be her home. No doubt about it, she considered The Bahamas her home.”

Mr. Stern said that when Daniel died, “a lot of people really came to Anna’s aid.”

He also defended the Gibson clan, which he asserted was “very good” to him and Ms. Smith, shielding them from the press, and taking them out on King Eric Gibson’s boat when it was the only escape.

“I feel bad, and I know Anna would feel horrible about the way that the media – even the local media to some extent – treated Shane Gibson after Anna passed, and even before she passed,” Mr. Stern said.

“I know firsthand that the accusations against him are not true. He essentially was punished for being a good Samaritan.”

Looks like BOTH Shane Gibson and Eric Gibson were involved in this regatta fiasco. It also sounds like Howard mught have a private plane. Will that be for a quick escape some day?

Howard loves it there apparently...but Howard always has ulterior motives and this little visit is probably just to establish that he hasn't abandoned the Horizons.

Private plane? Naw, those are pretty hard to steal or squat! I doubt it. His “back and forth” just means he puddle-jumps to FL every 6 months, then turns around and comes back to start the “visitor” clock all over again. Despicable, as are all his actions.

He may be gearing up a campaign at the behest of his attorney, Wayne, lol: “ ... [Daniel] was the difference between her and Marilyn Munroe,” he said. ...”

I had some of the history of the “Lucayan Lady” in my notes - this was from 2004:

~~~~
Gibson pumps thousands into restoring sloop
By Devin Francis
NG Sports Editor
Usually, fairy tales chronicle stories where Prince Charming rescues the lady in distress from the clutches of a deadly dragon.
The prince would usually have to scale the highest tower, slay the dragon and then ride off into the sunset with his lady love.
However, in this story, the lady weighs at least two tons and the prince is a five foot musician with a passion for sailing.
Local boat owner and skipper, ‘King’ Eric Gibson said Friday he spent over $45,000 to restore the newest of his fleet of racing vessels: The Lucayan Lady.
Gibson rescued the legendary boat from her resting place in a Grand Bahama boat yard seven years ago and christened it Friday in a brief ceremony at Arawak Cay.
He now hopes that the sloop, which has won almost every major Bahamian regatta, can continue her winning ways when she takes to the water again in the annual New Year’s Regatta at Montagu Bay. The ‘A’ Class boats will race Saturday afternoon.
“She was in the bone yard ready to be dumped,” Gibson said, “I brought it up, sailed her for a little while and then, because she was outdated, in bad shape and too small (in comparison to more modern boats) we decided to refurbish her and bring her up to current specifications.”
Gibson and boat builder, Tommy Thompson who worked on the boat for the better part of thirteen months, and $45,000 later, had what they felt was a vessel worthy enough to carry on the Lucayan Lady’s rich winning tradition.
“The reason it didn’t cost that much was because I did a lot of the work myself,” Gibson said. “A lot of the work a person would normally pay for, I did, so I didn’t have to spend that much.
“To refurbish an ‘A’ Class like this boat usually costs a lot more,” he said.
Gibson said he fully expects the Lucayan Lady to become a force to be reckoned with on the local regatta scene.
“I think she is going to start walking away with championships from the start of the season straight through the finish,” he said, “there is no other boat out there that has what she’s got. She’s got something special.”
The Lucayan Lady was previously owned by Grand Bahamian businessman and Port Authority president, Edward St. George, who commissioned the boat to be built in 1979 by famed Bahamian boat builder and skipper the late Kingston Brown.
