And the power of attorney might've been what he was referring to when he said at the hearing that he had Anna's authorization to sign her name on checks and stuff.

If that bum had her sign a power of attorney over to him, imo it would be invalid. Invalid or not, the bum had legal obligations to take care of her debts if such a document existed.
