That could happen, I guess, but with today's good manufacturing practices (GMP's), it is highly unlikely unless someone did it intentionally.

Early on they suspected it was the wheat gluten used - but it could be the wheat gluten was tainted with rat poisoning.
I have not checked the headlines yet to see how they think the rat poisoning got into the pet food.
