IMO the ball is in Larry's field and he knows this - I think he can read right through Stern and his lawyers.
I think his problem with Opri was that Opri continued not to trust Larry even though Larry was not making any deals with Stern. I think Opri felt Larry could cave in under the pressure and I think Larry sensed Opri's mistrust in him.
Opri had a over the ball breaking attitude 100% of the time and I think Larry felt it was not necessary to be that way all the time.
