I understand satellite tv—I’ve had both direct and dish before.
So how does a dvr work without tivo? I think I’ve seen them sold by themselves?

I don't even understand the questions. I am the just show me the GO button type. :o)
Tivo is a independant service... you buy one and throw it on your TV and pay TIVO a monthly charge.
Or get a DVR with with your satellite provider - each of these DVR are different because they are used with the Satellite company
But a Tivo & DVR are the same toy.
