I think Stern saying she had a 'rough night' means SHE DIDN'T DIE LIKE WE EXPECTED HER TO! Maybe she was seizing and trashing...but didn't DIE like she was supposed to do....therefore, he had to give her something to 'relax her and calm her down'...to HELP her go about DYING...like she was SUPPOSED TO DO earlier!!
