Dig up the well and recover the wreckage for testing.

I saw a documentary on this and they tried to dig up the junk. There's a shed built on top of the old well and the owner wouldn't let them move it. They concluded that there wasn't anything to the story based on the lack of news coverage beyond one unsubstantiated story in the local paper.

You would think the owner would have jumped at the chance to prove that it happened, and become a 'celebrity' too boot, rather than not allowing it and justifying the skepticism.
