The Police announced their first tour in decades Monday at a rehearsal at the Whisky a Go-Go as fans crowded near the legendary Sunset Strip nightclub in Los Angeles.
The group, which led off Sunday nights Grammy Awards with a live performance, broke up in 1984. Members Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland have since pursued individual careers.
The packed club got a taste of Police hits, including Roxanne and Message in a Bottle, and listened to the members talk about the decision to reunite and joke about the conflicts that led to their split.
If youd asked me the day before I made this decision, I would have said, Youre out of your mind. My head is somewhere else, Sting said. I woke up one morning about three months ago, and this light bulb went off in my head: Im going to call Andy and Stewart and tell them we should tour.
His bandmates kidded about Stings demanding personality.
We refer to Sting as our dear leader, Copeland said.
On a good day, Summers added.

My God I'm getting old.
Damn, I wish I was a Gen Xer.
I'm a Boomer actually.
I saw the Police on their first US Tour - they played the Ontario theater in DC. I think they may have opened for Blondie as I don't think we went to see them.
I'll be there, though I won't be getting any of those insane $200 tickets. I'm a $50 ticket kinda guy.
Ping.
Nor would I; I'm quite cheap by nature.
Last saw them in Dallas in '84. Don't quite remember what I paid but remember standing on the padded folding chair a lot.
Damn Limey Liberals want to give money for another social welfare program in the name of clean water! who needs clean water anyway?
Well, Okay, Stewart in a Yank and the but is the best member of the band.
I saw them four or five time and the last tour sucked.
The rest of the shows were great.
Agreed, earlier shows were better.
I liked their first two major USA tours the best.
Good thing is there has been such a long break they don't have to play a lot of material from the "current" final album. They can dig into the better cuts from the catalog.
I bought a DVD called "Everybody Staired" for $3 at Silver Platters. It is a compilation of high quality 8mm film footage taken by the drummer for pretty much their entire period from just as they were getting semi-popular to the breakup.
Pretty interesting.
