And furthermore, why was he only able to leave her for 10 or 15 minutes without calling to check on her. How bad a shape was this woman that you can't go 10 or 15 minutes without checking on her????
I once read a book (maybe, a Sharon McCrumb novel) where a former soldier in the Civil War had been treated with arsenic on the battlefield and ate a tiny bit of arsenic on his pastries every day. Because he had become so adapted to that small amount of arsenic he was basically addicted to it. So, to kill off that abusive SOB, his wife began leaving off the arsenic. He became ill and died shortly after because his body needed the arsenic. The doctor in the storyline suspected the wife of murder, but was unable to prove it. I believe he eventually figured it out or maybe she confessed; I've forgotten. Interesting storyline. Get someone addicted (physically addicted) to a substance. Let them suffer through the symptoms of withdrawal, then load them up with a really high dose (compassionately, of course -- because their begging for their "hit".
