Did you read the last paragraph in the article? I think Daniel was trying to get HKS out of his mothers' life. I do believe the stories he wasn't into drugs and he would not have flown through customs or current airport security with drugs in his pockets.... not in this day and age, and he flew commercial (American as I remember).
How convenient would it be for HKS to plant pills to bring to Ford Shelly's attention and flush down the toilet, etc... after all, he didn't do this until Shelley arrived at The Horizons... seems a little too pat and contrived to me.
