DVR recorders are coming down in price. I got a really decent one last year that has VCR and DVD RW + for about $275-$300.

I'm curious. What brand? Do you need to subscribe to a service to operate it (like TIVO)?

Mine is a Panasonic, and you don't subscribe to it like Tivo. Tivo records from tv to a hard drive, but the DVD writer tapes from tv to a writeable DVD. They even have re-writeable DVD's if you tape a series of show to watch but you don't want to necessarily keep.

It's really just the new VCR, but it has a built in VCR becuase it makes it more marketable (since a lot of people have VCR tapes they would like to convert to DVD).

If you want one, do a little research on the + or - factor, becuase some machines will record the DVD, but if you want to play the DVD in a different player it has to be recorded in + or - format.
