When I was hunting with the dogs, Zulu was my 'springer' (better than Logan at finding them)... she was absolutely passionate about finding the birds and flushing them up. For three years, I think, I missed them all :~) I sortof wondered if I ever actually killed one if it would break her heart. "Geeze... I didn't know you were trying to kill them!" She thought it was all about the flurry and the rush and the boom and watching them fly away :~D
Of course, when we did actually hit one, then Logan could finally do something, and he did! He did well. And Zulu found it very exciting, bouncing around him when he came back with it.
This was the first bird we managed to kill, and I think the only one we managed to pose a picture of when we got home.
Labs aren't meant to put up birds, it's not what they do best. But they CAN be trained to do it, and the whole purpose of the Upland phase of the hunt tests is to encourage people to teach their Labs to hunt properly, quartering ahead of the guns, and to flush the birds. Shelley's not ready for that, the Upland test is generally given after Finished. But she had a good time anyway!
