The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

MO....from what I have seen watching others with fish tanks, they are a pain in the a$$. I’m sure there are some people who will disagree, but everyone I’ve know that had them, got rid of them after a few years, and say they never want one again:)

I’d get rid of it.

Heh... yeah - they are a pain. I’ve had them for more than a few years, but haven’t done much with it in the last couple. They are pretty when they’re clean. But I’m tired of it, at least inside...

Why would having it outside make it any less of a pain.

I did just think of something....I don’t know if they sell them there or not, but Jenny had a tank with Hermit Crabs in it. Absolutely no maintenance with them, expect to keep water and food in them, You can set them up to look really pretty, and I thought it was a nice conversation piece in her house.

It’s less work outside because with it outside I can just stick the hose in it and let it overflow to flush some fresh water though it. No siphoning and hauling of buckets.

Oh, well that makes sense.

I still wouldn’t want to do it:) I’ve enough animals.

I don’t have the July issue yet but I’ll look as soon as I get it. I wish for ApHC shows close enough here to campaign some of our horses - one of these days :)

I’d just take the tank and clean it out and store it - in the barn, under the house, somewhere until you want fish again. I’ve found over the past thirty years I do and then don’t on a regular basis. After giving away everything and then replacing it a couple of years later at quite an expense, I finally just store my tanks in the shed until I’m in the mood again.

Well, we’ve decided, at least for this year, to do the tadpoles. I called and you can get tadpoles for free from the pond supply store :~) I think it’d be fun to watch them grow up and hop away, and then this fall I’ll put it away before it freezes, and if the mood strikes me I’ll do the same next summer.

That will be cool to watch them mature and hop off. Be sure to keep the tank in constant shade and take pictures of their development (like I need to say that :) )

I don’t know about the tadpoles you all have there, but the boys and I dipped some out of a puddle a few weeks ago and put them in the little swimming pool I have for the dogs to drink out of. The tadpoles changed to tiny frogs and hopped away within 2 weeks.

Well, my little water garden tank is all done :~)

I should have taken the pictures before I watered in the flowers, they look a little wet and droopy now, but you get the idea.

I found this great big piece of deadwood out in the back forty to put in it... It should provide shady shelter places for tadpoles to hide in, and places for the frogs to climb out on.

Here's a couple of the tadpoles :~D We got some neat live plant things to put in at the nursery, the tadpoles should eat these, I read on the internet they also like chopped lettuce :~)

And of course, the rubber duckie :~)

Here it is in context...

It looks great, I can almost feel it :) from the pictures. How many tadpoles are in there? Yellow ducky is a great touch :)

There’s about 10 tadpoles I think... various sizes. I saw one that had back legs already, and a couple that are very small.

Anyone up, rockyridge from the horse.com forum sure needs some prayers. Her daughter and two students are overdue from a riding trip.

How did you hear of this issue? I tried to search for where it came from.... I’m not familiar with that poster, really.... Is it true they’re found now and coming home?
