The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Probably so...I’ll check by!

We were intending to go camping but as of last night had blown off the idea because of the rain.

Good Morning.

Ecurbh, good luck with the new Job!

Very cool pictures of Pony, Hair. She looks like she really enjoys jumping. Fun for you too.

Sorry to hear that TX and OK are expecting more rain. Sure makes for an awful summer. It is cloudy here, but I might take Alison for a short trail ride when she gets home from Bible school. It looked like rain yesterday, so we didn't go.

Well, I FINALLY got some rain yesterday afternoon! WOO HOO! It was only an inch or so, but it’s amazing how much the grass has greened up just overnight. Every little bit helps. And we’ve got a decent chance for some more over the weekend. I sure hope it does, even thought I’ve got a ride planned for tomorrow, because we’re just parched here. I know the rest of y’all are washing away and are praying for the rain to stop, so just pray it over my way and we’ll all be happy! ;o)

I’m usually really laid back but I go looking for truck drivers at a convience store down the road. (sounds kinky huh?lol) We have a no parking sign by the highway but they park there to run into the store. You can not see around them to get out. One day I almost hit a car that pulled out in front of me as I was coming home. Funny thing is a police officer was at the store too and got behind me. When I pulled in my driveway I stopped him as he came by. I told him “ you gonna do anything about that truck?. You guys could make enough to all get raises just at that one store” He laughed and said he would go check it out. I see they are patrolling that spot more now. Anyway when I go into the store I loudly say “Ok, who’s truck is that?” The no habla English game doesn’t cut it either caz I can say truck and police in Spanish.

Good morning....the sun is shining:)!!!

The forecast says 80% chance, but looking at the radar, looks to me like it is curving around the Tulsa area and is going to miss us!

The festival got off to a rather disappointing start last night...it never rained hard, but misted and sprinkled a few times pretty good, and was dark and gloomy all evening. I just may not make it down there tonight, but will probably go tomorrow morning for the turtle races, and parade, and if it’s not raining to the street dance tomorrow night. If it’s rains they are moving all the activities to the community center, which, IMO, would not be so fun. I like sitting on the sidewalk outside and watch the people. Inside the crowds (if there even was a crowd), would just be to nerve racking for me.

Becky

I do hope it doesn’t rain on your festival!

Good morning all - been raining all night here too, but like Frog, we’re not minding it yet. It is supposed to clear up for the weekend.

CD - She does trust me a lot more than she did, I just wonder if someone else could start there, or if they’d have to start over. There’s so many kids on that horse forum that are scrappy little riders, some of them quite accomplished, and they all want to ride her... I just wish they were closer.

Must be nice, I think I have a glass bowl around my place. It has only rained once in over two months.

Heck I’m going even if it rains, coz sure as we don’t, it won’t rain. Elizabeth is going to come and I’m taking Grace for her to ride. Kathryn Scott and her niece may come. Kari and her husband and possibly a few others are coming too. I called Dalton and his wife said he had a friend who was having an auction tomorrow and he needed to go to that, but she didn’t know what time. So he may ride with us for a little while, or he may not, depending on whan the auction is. Donny said he would be there at least for the first half of the ride and would call some of the others and let them know. So we may have a fair crowd. The restaurant is closed so bring your lunch.

Take some pictures of the turtle races. I wanna see if 2J’s turtle wins. 2J, do they put some kind of markings on the turtle’s shells so you can tell which one is whose?

Good morning,

Local news this morning :) The Pony Express rides again.

Pony Express monument dedicated

The National Pony Express Association, of which McPherson is a past president of the Nevada Division, held its annual reride last week. It re-enacts the ride from St. Joseph, Mo., to Sacramento every year. The Pony Express lasted from April of 1860 to October 1861. This year marked the 147th anniversary of the Express.

The original route did parallel Highway 50 through the Dayton Valley to Carson City, said State Archivist Guy Rocha, who attended the dedication.

"This has been documented as the general route of the Pony Express," he said. "This was an opening of where one would come out of Dayton Valley, go over the rise we know as Mound House, and drop into the Eagle Valley."

Of course, it didn't look the same in the 1860s.

"The challenge to get into Carson City was that the water table was very high," he said. "They had to follow the contour of the hills to get in, rather than go straight through. It wasn't always the most direct way, but it was a way to go without horses slogging through the marsh. There was a lot of marshland then."

The idea for the silhouette came into being three years ago when McPherson went on a trip to Marysville, Kan., where a similar silhouette greets visitors on the east and west entrances to the city, and wanted one like it for Nevada.

"It took awhile to find something that could withstand the wind," he said.

The silhouette was created by artist Bill Muerle, of Carson Valley, who donated his time. Muerle, who owns Decorative Iron Plus, frequently does cowboy and cowgirl silhouettes, though usually not that big.

He said it took him two months to make the Pony Express monument.

"The nice part is I always thought of doing something of this magnitude, this size, for the accomplishment and the recognition," he said.

Though he donated his talent and labor, Muerle said had he charged for his work the bill would have come to about $3,500, in addition to the $2,700 in materials.

The placement of the monument was a team effort; in addition to McPherson and Muerle, Capital City Concrete donated concrete for the base, DIS Backhoe dug the hole, workers at Miles Construction stored it and hauled it to the location. Developer Phil Cowee, of Dayton, donated the land.

It was painted by Paul Webster and his son, Tom. Paul Webster told McPherson the paint job should last 20 or 30 years, but couldn't guarantee the silhouette would be respected by area birds.

He's neat... and it looks like he'll be a neat view from the road below. There's a wild horse monument in Eastern WA that's of the same type... it's very visible from a long ways off, up on a butte coming up the hill from the Columbia.

That is so cool. I am going to send the information on that to some of the wild horse organizations around here - that will give them something to spend their money on and it would look great here :)
